It’s been nearly a year since TPD Architecture and Design was named a Forbes Best-in-State Residential Architect.

(Typing that still feels surreal.)

I thought this might be a good time to reflect on what that means and how Forbes chose TPD for this great honor.

Forbes began with more than 20,000 firms nationwide, eventually inviting just over 1,000 to submit an exemplary residential project for consideration. To be recognized among so many talented architects doing thoughtful work across the country is both humbling and meaningful.

What makes this recognition especially significant is Forbes’ emphasis on high design that is rooted in place—something that has always been central to our work at TPD. We believe good residential architecture starts with listening: understanding the people who will live there, the place itself, and how a home can continue to serve a family as life changes.

We’re grateful to Forbes for shining a light on residential architecture, and even more grateful to the clients, contractors, and collaborators who make this work possible.

A narrow galley kitchen and an adjacent laundry room were never going to keep up with a family of five.

So in this Colonial Hills home, we removed the laundry room altogether and let the kitchen expand into that footprint. Every inch was considered: appliance storage sized to fit, cabinetry built around how the family actually stores dishes, and abundant natural light throughout.

Positioned at the front of the home, the kitchen now does double duty as a gracious entry and the true functional heart of the house. It's a good reminder that the best kitchens aren't just about surfaces and finishes. They're about designing around the specific way a family moves through their day.

What makes a bathroom accessible? Often, it’s the same features that make a bathroom more enjoyable for everyone.

▫️ Grab bars: Extra support when you need it, and easy to plan for before you do.
▫️ Curbless showers: No threshold to step over means a cleaner look and easier entry.
▫️ Wide tub decks: A convenient place to sit, perch, or make getting in and out easier.
▫️ Easy-to-reach controls: Turn on the water and adjust the temperature before stepping into the shower.
▫️ Slip-resistant flooring: Better traction on wet surfaces means a safer bathroom for everyone.

See the pattern? These may be called “accessible” features, but they sound pretty great regardless of your age or mobility.

That’s the beauty of thoughtful design: a bathroom that works better now can also continue working for you for years to come.

Plenty of outdoor space to relax, gather, and enjoy time together—that’s what this Mountain Brook family was dreaming of.

With four children of varying ages, they needed more functional space for everyone and a better connection between the home and their expansive backyard.

Here’s how we made that happen:

▫️ A new screened porch and terrace created multiple outdoor spaces for kids and adults alike.
▫️ Double fireplaces serve both the upstairs living area and the newly landscaped backyard.
▫️ A sophisticated basement renovation connects the original home to the recreation space beneath the terrace.

The result is a home that feels more connected, more functional, and thoughtfully designed for the whole family to enjoy.
