What to unplug when a storm is coming.

Anything with a circuit board and a price tag. The TV, the desktop, the console, the router, the good speakers. Expensive to replace, five seconds to unplug.

What you can't unplug is the whole point. The HVAC, the range, the well pump, the garage door opener, the dishwasher -- those are hardwired, and no power strip on earth is protecting them. A strike two streets over sends a spike down the line and those boards are the ones that die.

Unplugging is the free version. It just only covers half your house.

Your AC is the hungriest thing on your panel.

A condenser pulls a big slug of current the instant it kicks on, several times what it draws once it's running. That part is normal. What isn't normal is the lights dimming through the whole house every time it starts, or a breaker giving up on the hottest afternoon of the year.

That usually means the circuit, the wiring, or the panel is undersized for what the unit is asking for. It gets worse as the compressor ages and works harder to do the same job.

Do your lights flicker when the AC starts? That's worth sorting out before next summer, not during it.

That little TEST button isn't decoration.

A GFCI outlet watches for current leaking somewhere it shouldn't -- through a wet countertop, a frayed cord, a person -- and cuts power in a fraction of a second. That speed is the whole point.

But they wear out, and they wear out silently. The only way to know yours still works is to push TEST, confirm the power actually dies, then push RESET.

Kitchen, bathrooms, garage, basement, outdoors. Two minutes for the whole house.

That chirp at 2am isn't random.

Smoke alarms fail loudly and at the worst possible hour on purpose. Battery voltage sags as the house cools overnight, which is exactly why it always seems to start around 2 or 3 in the morning and never at noon.

A chirp every 30 to 60 seconds is usually the battery. A chirp that keeps going after a fresh battery usually means the unit itself has aged out. Most detectors are done at 10 years, and the manufacture date is printed on the back.

If yours are original to the house, it's worth flipping one off the ceiling and reading that date.

A power strip has a job. It just isn't this one.

The strip under your desk protects what's plugged into it, and only until it quietly wears out absorbing hits you never noticed. It does nothing for the things that cost the most to replace, because those are hardwired: your HVAC, your range, your well pump. A strip can't reach them.

Level 2 charging: overnight instead of over three days. 🚗

A standard wall outlet trickles a few miles of range an hour. A proper Level 2 charger on a dedicated 240V circuit fills the car while you sleep.

The install is a panel capacity check, a dedicated circuit run to the garage, the unit mounted at a height that works for your car, and everything tested before you plug in. Usually one day.
