We see things you don't see anymore.

That number was established when the average American was significantly shorter than they are today. It has not been updated. It is just the number everyone uses because everyone has always used it.

If you are taller than 5'8" you are slightly hunching over your counter every single day and you have accepted this as normal.

It is not normal.

It is a standard that was never designed for you.

Custom cabinetry means your counters are built at the height that works for your body. Not the height that works for a building code written decades ago. An inch and a half can completely change how your back feels after cooking a full meal.

This is the kind of thing nobody tells you when you're renovating.

The kitchen triangle is the relationship between your sink, your stove, and your refrigerator. The three points of the triangle you move between every single time you cook anything.

When it works you don't notice it. You just flow.

When it doesn't — you're taking twelve unnecessary steps to make pasta. You're pivoting around an island that's in the way. You're opening the fridge into the person standing at the stove. You're exhausted and dinner wasn't even that complicated.

The ideal total triangle distance is between 12 and 26 feet.

Each leg between 4 and 9 feet.

No major traffic path cutting through it.

No island blocking the flow between any two points.

Most builder kitchens get this wrong.

Most remodels fix the look without fixing the logic.

Everything you need to think about before building a home bar. 🥃

Because the difference between a bar that works and one that just looks good is all in the planning.

Location first. Everything else second. Basement, butler's pantry, dining room corner, bonus room — the best bar location is the one closest to existing plumbing. Moving water lines is where budgets go to die.

The sink is non-negotiable. Every bartender in the world will tell you the same thing. You need a place to rinse, dump, and wash without walking to the kitchen every three minutes. Build the sink in. Always.

Size your storage around what you actually drink. Not what looks good in a photo. If you drink bourbon build deep shelves for tall bottles. If you collect wine build it around wine. Design for your real life not your aspirational one.

Refrigeration changes everything. A beverage fridge built into the cabinetry at the right height means cold drinks without interrupting the flow of the bar. Plan the electrical early. Retrofitting it later is a headache.

Lighting is the whole vibe. Under cabinet lighting. Interior cabinet lighting. A pendant above the bar. Lighting turns a built-in into an experience. Don't skip it.

Counter material matters more here than anywhere. This surface is getting wet, used hard, and judged by every guest. Quartz. Stone. Butcher block sealed properly. Choose something that can handle a real Friday night.

The bathroom design mistake almost everyone makes. 🛁

They pick the vanity last.

The tile goes in. The floors go down. The fixtures get chosen. And then — only then — does someone realize the vanity they actually want doesn't fit the space they've already committed to.

Start with the vanity.

It dictates everything. The plumbing rough-in. The mirror size. The lighting placement. The amount of counter space on either side. Every single decision in a bathroom flows from that one piece.

Get the vanity right first and the rest of the room falls into place around it.

Get it wrong and you're compromising every other decision to work around a mistake you made on day one.
