A little sunlight, a few plants, and suddenly the everyday spaces feel like you.
That’s the goal with an addition like this: not just more square footage, but a home that fits how you live now.

"Take that out, but come over here and let me explain to you what's happening in the wall."

That's the difference between a manager and a leader. One gets the task done. The other makes sure you understand why.

Steven Baczek Architect says that's what made Joe Lstiburek an exceptional leader in the early days at Building Science Corporation, and it's hard to find people like that.

"Gus is to Joe what Joe is to us."

That's Steven Baczek Architect on Gus Handegord, one of the mentors Joe Lstiburek brought in when he started the Westford Symposium, now known as Summer Camp.

In this conversation on Build It Forward, Nick Falkoff sits down with Steve and Kohta Ueno, two of BSC's earliest employees, in the Building Science Corporation Test Hut at Summer Camp 2026. They cover how Summer Camp started, stories from BSC's early field work, and what built behind the scenes.

Josh Salinger's building life changed in this Test Hut.

A chance conversation, a debate over building science principles, and the right person listening. It led to years of collaboration with Fine Homebuilding and Green Building Advisor, and the opportunity to share everything he's learned.

On the latest Build It Forward, Josh tells the whole story, and why giving it all away has only helped Birdsmouth Design-Build.

A roof that earns its keep.

Getting in early on a project isn't always enough.

On the latest Build It Forward, Josh Salinger of Birdsmouth Design-Build explains that even when architects let his crew in early, the advice didn't always stick. They were explaining small details on every job, getting pushback, and watching it turn into a game of telephone between the architect and the client.

Even the “small” rooms got the same attention as the big ones.
Clean tile, a floating vanity, and just enough personality underfoot to make mornings feel lighter.

Watching other builders online is great, until you copy something that's perfectly right for Alabama and you build in northern Minnesota.

On the latest Build It Forward, Josh Salinger of Birdsmouth Design-Build makes the case for local knowledge too. In Portland, his Contractors Breakfast Club has been getting together for years to talk about where to source things locally and which subs are doing good work.
