Performance is often measured in numbers. This home also tells a story.

The stained glass oculus reflects the Badi’ solar calendar, with motifs around the mumber 19, integrating time and light into daily life.

It sits within a roof designed for both rainwater collection and solar power to minimize operational carbon.

At our Cambridge ADU project, Pete walks through the full build of a floating stringer staircase that took over 13 months of iteration with the whole team to get just right. No structural posts, no skirt boards on the outboard wall, no Scotia molding. Everything that usually simplifies a stair build was not part of the design.

The staircase had to let light cascade through three floors, support aging in place, and appear to float with no visible structure underneath. Every detail, from the concealed steel flitch plates to the rift sawn white oak treads to the modern metal balusters, was carefully considered and crafted.

The homeowners wanted a place that could host large groups comfortably and still support aging in place over time.
A great floorplan, durable finishes, and thoughtful proportions make the house flexible for years to come.

This Newton home is a great example of how classical design and high-performance building don’t have to compete.

We worked closely with architect Henry Finch to make sure the architectural details and natural light that define this home were seamlessly integrated with continous control layers and sound building science behind the finishes.

This is what we love to do.

Kentucky to***co barns were built to do one job well: dry the crop.
They worked because heat and air flow could move through the structure and carry moisture away.

Old New England houses did something similar, just unintentionally. They leaked air, they ran warm, and they dried out.

Today we build tighter, on purpose. Drying is no longer an accident. It’s a design choice.
Control layers, good ventilation, and materials that can handle moisture keep the structure healthy for the long haul, with far more comfort day to day.

And when the weather is right, this home can still flip the script. Big doors pocket away, the kitchen becomes the backyard, and fresh air and friends do what they have always done.

Bordering conservation land changed the brief, and you can feel it in the way the glazing pulls the landscape into everyday living.

A modern aesthetic, warm wood tones, and just enough restraint so the view becomes the artwork.

What started as a 1970s ranch became something totally different, without starting from zero.
Reusing the existing foundation added constraint, but it also saved carbon and kept a piece of the site’s story in the build.

Great design did the rest: a tight footprint stretched upward and the whole home formed around a modern take on courtyard living.
