We’re not perfect, but we make it right when an accident happens.

This tree was dismantled without incident, until it came time to drop the trunk.

I checked the trajectory of the fall, knew it was going to fall short of the fence, and proceeded to fell the trunk.

It landed where I intended it to, but the Co-dominant union fractured upon impact. The log that detached from the main trunk flew 10 feet in the air, did a front flip, landed square on the brand new gate and then came to rest.

Once the log was carefully lifted off, we inspected the gate and to all of our surprise, it was unscathed. I’m not talking about “you wouldn’t notice” it had nothing but a bit of pine sap on the top rail.

Got very lucky on that!

Lesson learned. If I’m going to fell a co-dom stem, I’m likely going to tie the union together so that if it does break off, it’s secured.

The owner of the fence was very understanding, accidents happen. I assured them if the gate causes any trouble, I will be replacing it.
