It may not feel like fall, but the trees, shrubs, and perennials are already dreaming of their dormant season.

Heavy fertilization should STOP! Give your material the best chance for winter success by allowing it to harden off as it should.

Plant material has already begun its shut down process and should be allowed to naturally rest without a big push of late season growth.

A starter fertilizer, winterizer, or something of this nature is still fine as it should be low in nitrogen (the first of the three numbers listed on the package).

Plus, its aphid season and aphids LOVE the new fresh tender growth of many perennials and shrubs.

Wet, muggy, little to no air movement... hello fungus!

Leaf spot is a fairly common and relatively harmless fungal leaf problem.

▪Many trees and shrubs are prone to this fungus.
▪There are many types of Leaf Spot.
▪Roses, Crabapples, and even Maples can easily develop the signs of Leaf Spot fungus.

One or two seasons are not viewed as harmful to the tree or shrub. Repeated years can have a negative impact on the tree or shrub's photosynthesis ability.

Bottom line, once your leaves show the fungus you can only prevent the spread you cannot repair the damaged leaves. Remember just one or two seasons, and your tree will be fine.

Should you feel the need to treat, I like a natural fungicide with copper such as Bonide Copper Fungicide.

Always clean up infected leaf debris in the fall.

Problem area:
▪ Low backyard between several yards that irrigate often
▪ Constant moisture created issues for mowing
▪ Homeowners opted to use rock vs. mulch due to water movement in rainstorms

Future plans:
▪ Add raised beds for specialty Dahlias and edible plants
▪ Add moisture tolerant plant material for pollinators

It was a large undertaking, but 15 tons later the area will be easier to maintain, clean area for their dog, and gives a clean canvas for future plant additions.

It’s an awkward time of the year for bulbs. Don’t cut them back too soon. ✂️

The tops aren’t pretty, but they are important.

The greens are feeding the bulbs below. If you cut them back too soon, you are weakening your bulbs for next season.

Try braiding or tying them in knots to control their wild
look.

Some plants are still sleeping. Don't lose hope.

Hardy Hibiscus are one of a few perennials who are late to show life in the spring.

I have seen this beauty wait until almost June to show new shoots at the base. Don't dig it up too soon.

Last year's stems will not green back up, so cut them down to 3" and let then let it be.
