To celebrate the National Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe’s 100th anniversary, the Catholic Diocese of Dallas hired DBI to extend the bell tower to a height of 224 feet. In 1985, DBI built the 50-story Trammel Crow Center as LTV’s corporate HQ. At the time, it was the sixth largest building in Dallas. In 2017, DBI renovated and refreshed the office tower. Celebrating 23 years in October, the Nasher Sculpture Center was designed by Pritzker Prize winner Renzo Piano to house the private art collection of Patsy & Raymond Nasher. ⁠

Dee Brown Inc. was recently awarded a Golden Trowel Excellence Award by the Associated Masonry Contractors of Houston for the Ion Parking Garage in the Ion District, a 16-acre innovation hub in Houston’s Midtown, developed by Rice University. ⁠

This garage was designed to seamlessly blend into the surrounding infrastructure. ⁠

At each exterior elevation, the base of every wall begins with Academy Black granite,⁠
specifically quarried in the foothills north of Fresno, California. This material was selected for its durability as well as its elegance. The deep pure black color of the granite juxtaposed against the lighter patterned brick effortlessly blends the garage into the modern aesthetic of the Ion District.⁠

DBI utilized approximately 54,000 bricks, both Modular and Norman’s, varying in size and finish, set in several different patterns that change around the building. Technology was utilized to create shop drawings for each unique elevation, which helped determine the different quantities and sizes of each brick.⁠

The parking structure was designed with no specific focal point. Instead, each elevation showcases a lower level with uniquely patterned masonry walls. Combined with the vibrant greenery in the upper levels of parking, this creates an oasis that blends the garage into its urban setting.⁠

The Southern Methodist University Campus has developed remarkably over the last twenty-five years, with new construction projects underway on a nearly continual basis spanning that period.

The SMU Hughes Trigg building was one such project. Completed in 1987, its exterior envelope features cast stone cornices and trims, brick field veneer, and large-format cast stone panels at its podium. It was at the podium that the cast stone cladding was displaying failures. Failures included cracking, spalling, and displacement of panels, which naturally caused adjacent mortar and caulk joints to fail. Upon examination, it was evident that the rusting of the cast stones' internal rebar was the main source of the problems.

Pre-construction was an important period. During pre-construction, a phasing plan, field measurements, and shop drawings were completed. After erecting initial barricades, the west elevation podium was dismantled. Moisture-control scope followed, and then the stone was erected. Work then progressed similarly to the other elevations.

Over a span of 10 months, we safely replaced 7,000 SF of failed cast stone with Indiana Limestone while the building remained open and operational.

Despite being designated a Dallas Historic Landmark in 1987, the original Old Parkland campus was largely unoccupied and in disrepair. In 2006, a prominent real estate firm purchased the property and announced redevelopment plans.

Dee Brown Inc. has completed several projects as the campus has expanded. Commissioned to symbolize a connection between Old Parkland’s original campus and the northern growth across Maple Avenue, DBI recently completed a new Maple Avenue portal.

The installation of over 160 tons of large cubic stone required much pre-planning. Stones were shipped in order with picks made directly from the truck to the final position, thus bypassing laydown. Stone setting was accomplished over two weekends. It was done safely, without stone breakage, while avoiding undue disruption. DBI also provided and installed granite pavers and steps, and wood-mold brick pavers, which are a continued theme across the campus.

DBI’s Superintendents Steve Cantu and Oscar Rojas and their crew working on the Baylor Scott & White Heart Hospital in Frisco, Texas, were recognized as the “Crew of the Month” by the General Contractor DPR Construction.

“Crew of the Month is recognized by the DPR team at the beginning of each month to recognize crews who have gone above and beyond,” said Miguel Aguilar of DPR. “DBI’s team fulfilled all these qualifications: PTPs completed daily before starting the scope of work; Work areas clean and organized; PPE always worn by every crew member; and the Foreman attending daily huddles to plan work for the next day and eliminate last-minute scrambles which can lead to an incident.” A banner was created to display at the front of the jobsite entrance with a picture of the DBI crew.

"I am very honored that DPR chose our team to acknowledge as 'Crew of the Month' for their commitment to the project's safety," said DBI CEO Rob Barnes III. "They have run a great job, kept a positive focus on results while not sacrificing the safety of our team. It is rewarding to see our project teams being applauded for their dedication and hard work. Congratulations to Steve, Oscar, and all our team members at the BS&W Frisco Heart for their commitment to safety. Keeping our house clean and organized helps not only us but also contributes to the safety of the entire project."

DBI recently finished masonry at 23 Springs, a new Class-A office tower in the heart of Dallas’ Uptown district. The building offers 26 stories of office space atop 6 levels of underground parking. Additionally, the site includes a neighborhood park.

The building’s ground level is inset relative to the floors above. The exterior perimeter columns are faced with 3CM granite. Columns are plumb along the northwest elevation. By contrast, columns at other elevations are set at either a 6-degree or 12-degree rake.

Inside the 7800 sq. ft. lobby, DBI used 5’ x 2’6” thick-set granite flooring and 9’4” high marble panels. The panels were challenging to erect using blind anchors. At the Security Desk, stone cladding was carefully matched to yield a cubic appearance. The Monumental Staircase utilizes stone at its treads, risers, and landings. Both the Security Desk and Monumental staircase were fabricated in-house by DBI's Stone Finishes fabrication facility.

The project consisted of 7,500 sq. ft. of exterior stone cladding, 11,650 sq. ft. of Lobby finishes, and resulted in 16,750 man-hours.

To maintain the Energy Plaza tower’s 40-year premier status, ownership decided to modernize and repurpose a portion into residences. The ground and mezzanine levels are divided into two lobbies, one for residential and the other for office.

The Residential Lobby feature wall uses large-format basalt panels. The lobby also features stone at the monumental stair, two fireplace surrounds, and cabinetry. Levels 6 and 41 provide amenities. There, stonework includes book-matched bar claddings and several one-of-a-kind stone countertops.

The Office Lobby feature wall utilizes quartzite cladding in 5’ X 9’-6” dimensions. Adjacent is a stone-clad stair that leads to the Mezzanine, where panels are continued from ground level, and where the Mezzanine Bar’s portals are clad in stone.

Finally, the east site plaza was redesigned. Here, stone-clad screen walls separate public pedestrian traffic from private property. These walls use one material type in four finish selections to yield the desired varying coloration.

Founded in 1879, the Church of the Incarnation opened in 1902 before relocating to its current location in 1927 on McKinney Avenue in Dallas.
The church has been serving the community for 137 years. With over 4,000 members, it stands as one of the most well-known churches in the area.

The exterior brick masonry is comprised of a customized merging of 5 different brick blends to match the existing building, giving it a unique hue that is easily seen from US-75. Varied and intricate brick patterns can be seen around all elevations of the buildings, creating an aesthetic break from the running bond pattern seen throughout.

The three-building expansion took approximately nine months to complete. The exterior used approximately 4,700 sq. ft. of CMU, 46,000 modular face brick, and 31,000 sq. ft. of cast stone.

DBI is a full-service stone and masonry company. Our Special Projects division works with many buildings and institutional facility managers to maintain, update, modify and or repair and restore buildings though the various stages of a building's life. DBI has just been contracted by the Church of Incarnation East Window, Stained Glass repairs. We will be patching and repointing all the existing stonework after the stain glass repairs have been made. The stonework that the stained glass is installed in will be repointed on both interior and exterior faces. As we will be working in finished space, we will also be utilizing a dust collecting tools, have a clean air machine to minimize dust and funnel all of the dust outside the building. Repairs will be done in 2026.

In 2023, Dee Brown Inc completed work on the Dallas Country Club Fitness Building.

Located just north of downtown, the Dallas Country Club Fitness Building features a special blend of Leuders limestone laid up in full-bed mortar, trimmed out with cast-stone water tables, window surrounds, arches, sills, caps, and copings.

Full-bed brick is utilized in several different patterns. Thin brick veneers, installed in latex mortars, are featured between the stained wood trim elements in the gables, as well as the chimney stack.

All materials, colors, patterns, and bonds complement the main club, which was also completed by DBI nearly a decade earlier.
