Surveying plays an important role in translating engineering plans into accurate site conditions and construction layouts. Recently, members of Hourigan participated in an introductory survey training to learn more about the tools and techniques used in the field.

The hands-on session covered equipment including total stations, optical levels, and leveling rods, demonstrating how surveyors establish precise coordinates, measure distances and angles, and verify elevations across a site. Participants put their knowledge into practice by laying out an experimental site, calculating elevations and determining site coordinates.

Opportunities like these strengthen technical knowledge, encourage collaboration across our teams, and build a deeper understanding of the processes that support successful construction.

Over the past several weeks, the Hourigan team has visited 13 college and university recruitment events, connecting with students who are exploring their futures and considering careers in the construction industry.

Introducing students to the skilled trades early can help open doors to rewarding careers and strengthen the future of our industry.

Hourigan was proud to be part of Next Gen Skilled Trades Day at Piedmont Virginia Community College this past weekend. Students and their families had the opportunity to explore career paths through hands-on activities, live demonstrations, and conversations with local employers.

Events like this help connect the next generation with the skills, training, and opportunities that will shape our workforce for years to come.

: Batten University, Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA)

Designed to inspire creativity and connection, the new Virginia MOCA brings together thoughtfully designed exhibition spaces, interactive learning environments, and flexible spaces for the museum’s team and community.

From the sunlit atrium and expansive galleries to the interactive ARTLab, reimagined art studios, and new outdoor plaza, the completed museum supports a range of experiences that invite visitors to engage with contemporary art in new ways. Behind the scenes, dedicated art handling and storage spaces provide the functionality needed to support innovative exhibitions and the museum’s ongoing work.

We’re proud to have helped bring this new chapter for Virginia MOCA to life, creating a space that supports artistic expression, community engagement, and the continued appreciation of contemporary art.

As project teams evaluate structural systems and construction methods, mass timber presents an approach worth understanding. Cross-laminated timber (CLT) is one of the engineered wood products helping make it possible.

Manufactured by bonding layers of lumber in alternating directions, CLT panels offer structural strength and the precision of off-site fabrication. These qualities can enable more efficient installation, reduce on-site material handling, and increase design flexibility.

But the benefits of mass timber extend beyond the material itself. Successful projects depend on early coordination among the design and construction teams, careful planning for fabrication and delivery, and close attention to structural connections and building systems.

As interest in mass timber continues to grow, understanding both its potential and the considerations that come with it is essential to making informed decisions about how a building is designed and delivered.

A closer look at the details taking shape at UVA Alumni Association's new home, Aggarwal Hall.

At the south porch, a fresh concrete slab is now in place, alongside the project’s distinctive masonry arches. These elements require careful coordination between concrete and masonry work, bringing together different materials and construction techniques to achieve the intended design.

With each phase of construction, more of Aggarwal Hall’s architectural vision takes shape.

It was a meaningful evening for the Hourigan team as we gathered with members of the Richmond community to support March of Dimes.

The evening brought together Richmond’s culinary community for an incredible tasting experience, live auction, and Fund the Mission, while also giving attendees the opportunity to hear directly from families whose lives have been impacted by the organization’s work.

We were proud to support an evening that raised more than $270,000 to support the March of Dimes mission. Hearing those personal stories was a powerful reminder of the difference the organization makes for families during some of their most difficult moments.

Thank you to March of Dimes for the work you do for families in our community and beyond, and to everyone who helped make the evening such a success.
