A shingle-style lake cottage on Lake Winnipesaukee, in New Hampshire's Lakes Region.

The design centers on the screened porch — the room that does the most work on a New England lake. Timber brackets, floor-to-ceiling glazing facing the water, and cedar shingles left to weather to silver over time. The material palette is drawn from the setting: the pines, the granite, the light off the lake.

"Lakeside Story" — the name Connecticut Cottages & Gardens gave this Candlewood Lake home when they featured it.

The lot set the terms: rocky, narrow, and steep. The existing cottage was taken down and replaced with a larger shingle-style home that holds to the neighborhood's cottage vernacular while adding the space the owners needed. The lower level is set into the hillside, with the family room and bar opening onto lakeside patios and fieldstone stairs down to the dock. Above, an open main floor runs kitchen to living room, organized by a rhythm of heavy timber posts and beams, with glass doors framing the lake across its full width.

The kitchen earned a 2019 Design Innovators Award.

A straight house on a curved lakefront turns its back on half the view. So this one bends with the shore — a series of connected volumes, each angled to the water.

That left the transitions between the volumes to solve. We designed them as the knuckles: on the upper level, a built-in bar and sitting area; below, a breakfast bar, a powder room, and a daybed nook. Rather than lose that square footage to hallways, we made it usable.

8,000 SF. Post and beam structure. Arching trusses over the covered porch. Cathedral family room. 11-foot wood plank ceilings on the lower level. Stone chimneys, walnut cabinets, white oak floors. Live-edge dining table. Geothermal heat, solar panels, super insulated walls.

One of our most meaningful projects — and one of Ridgefield's most beloved landmarks.

The Prospector Theater opened in 2014 on the footprint of the original 1940 Ridgefield Playhouse, which had sat vacant for four years after a bank closed its doors. Founder Valerie Jensen saw something most people didn't. Her goal was simple: "We didn't need more art classes or craft shows. We just really needed jobs."

Today The Prospector is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit first-run movie theater where 74% of the workforce — known as Prospects — self-identify with a disability. Each Prospect is paired with a role that matches their strengths and passions. The theater has been featured on NBC Nightly News, honored by the New York Yankees during HOPE Week, and named Connecticut Employer of the Year by the State of CT and the Autism Action Coalition.

DCA designed the full complex — four theaters, concessions, café, bar, restaurant, film studio, and meeting rooms — with a replicated historic facade, copper penny ceiling, and dramatic open lobby featuring chandelier sculptures and murals.

We are proud to have played a part in bringing this extraordinary place to life.

In 1973, Doyle Coffin Architecture opened its doors in Ridgefield, Connecticut.

More than 50 years later, we're still here — still working with the same dedication to exceptional design, still building lasting relationships with our clients, and still proud to call Fairfield County home.

Over five decades we've designed custom residences, historic renovations, places of worship, country clubs, schools, banks, and community facilities. Each one a collaboration. Each one a reflection of the people and communities we serve.

Thank you to everyone who has been part of this journey — clients, collaborators, and neighbors. Here's to the next 50.
