Just visible from Highway 89, the Farmington regional center is entering its final months of construction. Clad in pewter brick with striking copper toned accents, the building will soon open its doors to serve Farmington and Davis County.

Inside, an upward-curving ceiling motif is repeated throughout the building, channeling natural light down through a bay of clerestory windows. It was no small feat to execute, but the payoff is worth every bit of complexity: transforming a space people usually dread into one that feels calm, open, and filled with light.

There's something special about this stage of construction. After months, sometimes years, of planning, the details finally start to materialize into something real. As we near completion, we're taking a moment to celebrate this milestone — and to look ahead to the day this building starts serving the community it was built for.

Students at USU may have noticed a new building rising in the middle of campus. The new Administration Services Building is taking shape as its neon (Sure-Board) clad walls establish the volume. Striking on their own, these walls - soon to be covered by a brick façade - create intimate, light-filled spaces that invite nature into the building.

Windows and skylights have been placed strategically throughout to create a calming atmosphere informed by the natural beauty of the surrounding campus. A bridge connecting the new building to the existing one adds more nature-filled vignettes.

This construction site is unlike any you've seen before. Cranes drop in fully kitted-out modules, like Legos, while the construction team guide them into place. This bespoke method of construction is on the cutting edge of efficiency and design. The Hideout station will benefit from the reduced site disruptions, speed, and quality control this method provides.

Hideout has a booming population, a 78.59% increase since the 2020 census, with the largest annual change of any Utah city at 8.25% (according to World Population Review). This has necessitated the construction of a new fire station to serve the growing community.

Split House is one of four designs for the residences at Blue Sky, currently in development at ajc architects. The house takes advantage of the sloped site and scenic views by "splitting" one volume into three and resting them into the slope. Horizontal circulation is achieved through glass-walled bridges that connect each wing on the main floor, with outdoor connections linking the wings on the floor below. This connective tissue carries you from interior spaces out into nature as you move through the home.

The northernmost wing houses two bedrooms, a bunkroom, and a secondary living space. From that living space, you cross one of the glass-walled bridges, following the home's main axis past a stair that descends to the walk-out subterranean floor, and arrive in the main volume of the home. Here you'll find the dining and living areas, along with the east-facing entrance (the home is entered via a bridge) and an office. The southernmost wing is dedicated to a spacious primary suite, accessed via another transparent bridge along the home's central axis.

Last week, ajc architects met with project stakeholders and Eden of to discuss interior design for the Edward, a permanent supportive housing project taking shape in Salt Lake. There's always something special about seeing swatches and samples in person: the care and attention put into every space of the project can be seen and felt for the first time.

The Edward, a permanent supportive housing project developed with The Road Home, provides housing for vulnerable and low-income residents across multiple phases. Our team used a modular system of carefully designed unit types to streamline the process, leaving one major question: the exterior façade.

Over the past several months, our team has produced more than 95 potential exterior treatments. The building sits on a busy street corner, so we sought designs that bring visual interest to the street while creating a space residents can feel at home in.

As we near a finalized design, we want to share some of the hidden effort that usually goes unseen.

At ajc architects, permanent supportive housing is more than a project typology, it's a cause we care about deeply. PSH offers people facing homelessness and chronic disability a real path to stability and a better quality of life, and we believe design has a direct role to play in that outcome.

Over years of work in this space, we've engaged closely with residents, service providers, and community partners to understand what actually makes these environments work. That process shaped a standardized unit prototype we can adapt to new construction or existing buildings alike, grounded in Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) and trauma-informed design (TID) principles. Well-lit common areas, secure entryways, private living spaces, and full accessibility aren't add-ons in our approach, they're core to how we design for residents' mental and physical well-being.

The result is a set of guidelines that address the complex needs of residents while strengthening the fabric of the community around them. We believe investing in high-quality PSH changes lives, and helps build a more equitable, inclusive society.

The 150th anniversary of the Battle of the Little Bighorn (Greasy Grass) is underway, and Buffalo's Fire, the journalism wing of the Indigenous Media Freedom Alliance, is documenting the commemorative events. A group of 300 horse riders crossed the long grass to reenact the "Charge up the Hill."
