Natural grass offers the undeniable charm of a classic backyard. It's soft for bare feet, perfect for kids and pets to play, and even helps cool your home in summer. ☀️ But be prepared for the commitment: regular watering, mowing, and fertilizing are all part of the package. 💦

Artificial turf, on the other hand, is a low-maintenance dream. 🌿 It stays green year-round, making it ideal for busy lifestyles or drought-prone areas. Plus, you can say goodbye to muddy patches and pesky weeds. 👋 However, keep in mind that turf can get hot in direct sunlight and has a higher upfront installation cost. 🔥

Ultimately, the choice depends on your priorities. Do you crave the natural beauty and feel of grass, or are convenience and water conservation more important? 🤔 Let us know in the comments which side you're on!

With summer just around the corner, it's the perfect time to get your Bay Area vegetable garden growing! Here are some delicious and rewarding options from the Sunset Western Garden Book, all suited for zones 14-17:

Zone 14 (Walnut Creek): Bask in the sweetness of Fantasia Nectarines (img 1). These beauties are known for their vibrant orange flesh and delightfully juicy flavor.

Zone 15 (Menlo Park): Sink your teeth into a Gala Apple (img 2). This classic variety offers a perfect balance of sweetness and tartness, making it a favorite for both fresh eating and baking.

Zone 17 (San Francisco): Embrace the fuzzy delight of Rio Grande Peaches (img 3). These freestone peaches are known for their juicy flavor and ease of peeling, making them perfect for summer treats.

Bonus Tips for a Thriving Summer Vegetable Garden:

Mulch Magic: Add a layer of organic mulch around your plants to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature.

Pest Patrol: Regularly check your vegetables for signs of pests like aphids or beetles. Take action early with organic methods or beneficial insects to keep them under control.

Know Your Zone: Double-check your Sunset Western Garden Zone to ensure you're planting vegetables suited to your specific climate. The Sunset Western Garden Book provides detailed information for each zone.

Water Wisely: Water your plants deeply and regularly, especially during hot and dry periods. Aim for the base of the plant and avoid overwatering.

Harvest Happiness: As your vegetables mature, pick them regularly to encourage continued growth and production. Enjoy the fruits (or should we say vegetables?) of your labor!

By following these tips and choosing the right vegetables from this list, you'll be enjoying a bountiful summer harvest from your very own Bay Area garden.

Keep Your Garden Thriving: Natural Pest Control Solutions

Pests bugging your beautiful blooms? Don't sweat it! Natural pest control offers safe and effective solutions to keep your garden healthy.

Prevention is Key:
The best defense is a good offense! Integrated Pest Management (IPM) focuses on preventing pests before they become a problem. This can include:

• Companion Planting (img #2): Certain plants deter unwanted visitors, while others attract beneficial insects like ladybugs that gobble up harmful pests.
• Physical Barriers (img #3): Row covers protect young plants, while gopher wire keeps burrowing rodents at bay.

Natural Allies (img #4):
Embrace the good guys! Attract birds, toads, and spiders with bird feeders, small water features, and a natural landscape. These natural predators will help keep pest populations in check.

Fighting Back Naturally:
When prevention isn't enough, fight back with eco-friendly options:

• DIY Sprays (img #5): Mix food-grade oils (citrus peels, garlic, hot pepper) with water for a safe yet effective bug spray.
• Diatomaceous Earth (img #6): This powder dehydrates soft-bodied insects like aphids.
• Neem Oil (img #7): A natural extract that disrupts the pests' life cycle when applied to the leaves via mixed spray.

Remember: Research specific solutions for your region and common pests. With a little planning and these natural methods, your garden can thrive pest-free!

In California's beautiful Bay Area (Sunset zones 14-17), we cherish our vibrant landscapes. But with a short rainy season, water conservation is key. Luckily, there are stunning plants that thrive in our warm, dry climate and require minimal watering!

This World Environment Day, let's celebrate the Earth by planting a waterwise garden. These drought-tolerant beauties not only save water, but they also:
• Reduce your environmental impact: Less water usage means less strain on local resources.
• Save you money: Lower water bills are a win for both your wallet and the environment.
• Attract beneficial wildlife: Native plants provide food and shelter for pollinators and other creatures.

At Liaison Landscapes here are some if the plants we like to use to keep your garden beautiful and drought tolerant:

Trees: Grace Smoke Tree (img 3)
Shrubs: English Lavender (img 4)
Groundcovers: Blue Fescue (img 5)
Annuals: California Poppies (img 6)

Strategies for reducing water usage's:
• Group plants with similar water needs to optimize irrigation.
• Utilize mulch to suppress weeds and retain moisture.
• Consider a drip irrigation system for efficient water delivery.

By incorporating these tips and waterwise plants, we can create a beautiful, sustainable garden that flourishes year-round.

Happy Environment Day!

Wood vs. Composite Decking: Weighing the Pros & Cons 🔨🌿

Building a deck is a fantastic way to expand your outdoor living space, but choosing the right material can be tricky. Here's a breakdown of the pros and cons of traditional wood and composite decking like Trex to help you decide:

Wood Decking:
Pros:
• Natural beauty: Wood offers a classic, timeless look that blends seamlessly with nature.
• Warmth & comfort: Wood feels comfortable underfoot, especially on bare feet.
• Stainable: You are able to stain natural wood to create a color preferred color tone.
Cons:
• High maintenance: Requires regular staining, sealing, and cleaning to prevent fading, rotting, and insect damage.
• Susceptible to weather: Can warp, crack, and splinter over time.
• Fire rating: Natural woods with the exception of Ipe is generally more susceptible to a poor fire rating.

Composite Decking (Trex):
Pros:
• Low maintenance: Requires minimal upkeep – no staining, sealing, or painting needed.
• Durable & weather-resistant: Resists fading, rotting, and insect damage.
Long lifespan: Comes with long warranties, typically 25-50 years.
• Variety of styles & colors: Offers a wide range of options to match your desired aesthetic.
Cons:
• Not completely natural: Made from a combination of wood and plastic.
• Can get hot in direct sunlight: May require cooling strategies like Struxure Outdoor Bay Area, shade sails, or misters.

Ultimately, the best choice for you depends on your budget, desired aesthetics, and lifestyle. If you're looking for a low-maintenance, long-lasting option, composite decking like Trex might be the way to go. But if you prefer the natural beauty and warmth of wood and are willing to put in the extra maintenance, then wood could be a good fit.

Mixing multiple materials in a space can be challenging, but with purposeful selection, it can create an inviting and comfortable living space. In this landscape we integrated Trex stairs with LED lights, leading to a sunken patio space finished in porcelain tile. We built an Ipe wood enclosure for the outdoor shower against the house and two @‌StruXurebayarea pergolas to provide shade for the elevated decks.

How would you spend a spring afternoon in this space?
