Zeterre Landscape Architecture was founded with a focus on creating unique outdoor ambiance and innovative design for exclusive homes. Cypress Ridge sits on a hillside, and on a property with that kind of grade, water is not decorative. It is structural. We ran it along the full length of the serpentine wall, let it sheet over the edge and drop into basins filled with dark river stone. The sound changes as you move through the garden, louder here, quieter there, giving each space its own atmosphere. That is the real reason water is here.

Most people see the weathered steel wall first. We see the single bloom stalk on that Hesperaloe pushing up between the Yucca rostrata, a quiet announcement that the planting is alive and deciding things on its own.

Fieldstone walls read as ancient, but every boulder was chosen and set by hand. Lacecap hydrangeas mass against them in blues and mauves while tall spires push through, because a coastal garden should feel as though the land remembered something and simply kept growing.

Back to Belvedere, one of my absolute favorites. I started with a vacant hillside wrapped around a Spanish Revival built in the early 1900s and no sense of arrival at all. My first move was aligning the entry straight on center with the house, so guests step off the street and instantly see Sausalito harbor on one side, San Francisco on the other, and the Golden Gate Bridge framing it all. Then came the infinity pool, then the fire pit as its deliberate mirror across the garden. I love putting surprises into my gardens, and this one has plenty of them waiting for you to find.

A pair of loungers angled toward afternoon light. Adirondack chairs gathered inside a ring of Buxus, close enough that voices never need to rise. The architecture here is classical and quiet, but the intent is personal. We design for how a place makes you feel, not how it photographs.

Cypress Ridge was designed to be exciting and calm, modern and classic all at once. You can feel that tension in a single planting bed where a massive agave rosette sits among fine-textured grasses, volcanic rock, and a hazy valley view dropping away behind them.

We design gardens that reveal themselves differently depending on where you stand. This courtyard holds a stepped limestone fountain, a twig bench, ferns pressing in from every side, and the particular stillness that happens when geometry sits inside something living and untamed.

One day. That's all it took to shift this early 1900s Victorian office from industrial pipes and bare walls to something that actually feels like a garden you want to work inside. Welcome to Zeterre's new studio off Divisadero. Come say hi and stay awhile.

A lot of clients look at a steep slope and see a problem. We see an opportunity to create outdoor rooms stacked at different elevations, each offering a completely distinct view. On this San Francisco project, six terraced levels turn under half an acre into a garden that feels nearly three times its size.

In classical Zen composition, stone and water do the work that flowers do elsewhere. Every surface here is chosen for what it withholds. The gravel courtyard, the linear rill with its river-stone bed, the sculptural root form anchoring the axis. Restraint is not absence. It is knowledge deciding what not to plant.
