D-SINE (Developing Skills through Independence, Networking and Empowerment) also known as Backstitch Studios, is my vision of creating an organization that embodies my years of experience in social services and my education in fashion design. The vision of D-SINE is to create an organization with the intention that in some way, large or small, individuals are provided with an opportunity to do jus
t that. D-SINE opens the door to folks who have been marginalized through life experiences such as incarceration, substance abuse, current or former sex work, and homelessness, who want to improve their quality of life through learning skills that can lead to more independence and potentially more opportunities. The D-SINE program teaches the basics of design, apparel construction and pattern making, having folks move up in incremental stages until they reach senior design level where they would create a line of clothing that could be sold and generate income for themselves. It is the hope that enough interest is garnered so that D-SINE can eventually acquire funding and become a realized dream.
