ad. Successful organic gardening relies on early observation and proper treatment, especially in the summer when everything (including pests) grows quickly! Here’s a bit more info on the two sprays I turn to when I need more than neem oil. Our team at The Backyard Farm Co has been using Monterey Lawn & Garden products for years!

Monterey Bt spray works for caterpillars, I often use it for cabbage worms on my kale plants. Bt stands for Bacillus thuringiensis which is a naturally occurring soil bacterium that produces protein crystals which, when eaten by caterpillars, disrupts their digestive systems irreversibly. Different strains of this bacterium affects different insects, so there’s no chance of harming other types of insects or animals.

Monterey Garden Insect spray is also a naturally derived soil bacterium (Saccharopolyspora spinosa), but it affects a wider range of insects by attacking their nervous system. It’s highly effective, the only downside is that it will affect bees if they land in it while it’s wet - to avoid that, apply it at sundown when bees aren’t active. This spray is the main reason I’m able to grow pest-free chard through the summer, and it even works for cucumber beetles and tomato hornworms.

ad. Maybe cross your fingers, knock on wood, AND use Monterey Complete Disease Control to keep your tomatoes healthy? I’ve been using this product for years because it’s OMRI organic and the active ingredient is a simple beneficial bacterium (Bacillus amyloliquefaciens) which naturally prevents and controls fungal and bacterial problems.
