Sarasota contractor is charged with additional counts

According to the Probable Cause Affidavit

Kevin Eugene Mathis, doing business as Kevin E. Mathis, LLC, is the subject of an investigation into alleged unlicensed contracting activities in Florida in February.

According to the investigation, Mathis is accused of violating Florida Statute 489.127(1)(f), which prohibits individuals from engaging in or advertising contracting services without the required state registration or certification.

The complaint stems from a contract with ### ###x for the construction of a room addition to her home. The project included framing, electrical, plumbing, and air conditioning work. The total contract value was $135,000, and ### reportedly paid Mathis $60,250 directly.

Investigators allege that Mathis abandoned the project after completing only minimal work and did not refund the money that had been paid.

Records from the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) indicate that neither Mathis nor Kevin E. Mathis, LLC, holds a Florida contractor's license. As a result, they were not authorized to perform contracting work in the state.

The investigation also notes that Mathis previously received a cease-and-desist notice related to alleged unlicensed contracting activity in a separate case (Case No. 2025013442).

The two additional counts that posted on 7.21.26 are:
FRAUD-IMPERSON: LICENSED CONTRACTOR STATE OF EMERGENCY
LARC: CONTRAC FAIL REFUND EXCESS VAL WORK $20K-$200K

They need to crack down on more of these people! There are a lot of people doing this illegally! Do your research before hiring people claiming to be contractors! Ask for license numbers and look them up! You will be thankful you will avoid the nightmare that comes with hiring illegal contractors!
