Does your upstairs feel like a sauna while the first floor feels perfectly comfortable? You are not imagining it. ๐ฅต๐
Warm air naturally rises through the house. Stairways, hallways, wall cavities, and small air leaks can allow heat to move upward, making the second floor and attic significantly warmer than the rooms below.
When the attic has poor ventilation, that heat can become trapped beneath the roof. The attic then acts like a hot lid sitting directly above the bedrooms. Proper soffit vents allow cooler exterior air to enter near the roof edges, while a ridge vent gives hot air a place to escape near the roof peak.
Air movement inside the room also matters. A ceiling fan set to summer mode should rotate counterclockwise when viewed from below, pushing air downward and creating a cooling breeze. It does not lower the actual room temperature, but it can make the space feel much more comfortable.
Another common problem is thermostat placement. When the thermostat is downstairs, it only measures the temperature around the first floor. The cooling system may shut off because the downstairs area has reached the selected temperature, even though the bedrooms upstairs are still hot.
Attic ventilation, air sealing, insulation, ceiling fans, duct balancing, and thermostat zoning can all help improve comfort.
