before you can build something beautiful,
you have to be willing to let go of what's there.

so the crew got to work.

the overgrown shrubs.
the trees that had quietly swallowed the front of the house whole.
the wall that had seen better days.

one by one, carefully, intentionally —
they came out.

some of the plants got set aside.
they'll find their place in the new design.
others got passed along to neighbors
who could give them a new home.

not wasted. considered.

and now, for the first time in years,
you can see the house.
really see it.

this one starts with a yard that forgot what it was for.

beautiful home.
young family.
kids with energy that has nowhere to go.

and a front yard dominated by shrubs and trees
that have slowly, quietly
swallowed the house whole.

A sidewalk that serves no purpose.

so we're starting over.
the slope gets addressed.
the wall gets built.
the things that block and crowd and hide
get cleared away.

what replaces them will be something the whole neighborhood feels —
an entrance that announces something.
a yard that invites people in.
a space where kids can actually be kids
and neighbors stop to wave.

because there are irises blooming at the jobsite.

Siberian irises.

purple and quiet and unbothered by all the work happening around them.

planted for this moment.
they knew it was time.

and isn’t that something.

that in the middle of all the demolition and the building and the doing —
the yard is still doing what yards do.

it is still becoming.

still blooming.

still reminding us why any of this matters.

we build so that beauty has a place to live.

sometimes it shows up before we’re even finished.
