Hurricane & Severe Weather Yard Preparation Recommendations:
With the possibility of strong winds and heavy rain affecting our area, we recommend taking a few precautions to help protect your property and landscaping.
Bring Pets Indoors: Bring dogs, cats, and other outdoor pets inside before the storm arrives. Make sure chicken coops, animal enclosures, and shelters are properly secured and animals have access to safe shelter.
Patio Furniture: Secure or move outdoor tables, chairs, cushions, umbrellas, and lightweight furniture into a garage or storage area.
Children's Toys: Pick up and store toys, bicycles, scooters, trampolines, and other play equipment that could be blown around.
Flowerpots & Decorations: Move hanging baskets, potted plants, garden decorations (Halloween decor), and lightweight planters to a protected location.
Trash & Recycling Bins: Secure trash cans and recycling containers to prevent them from blowing over.
Pool & Outdoor Accessories: Store pool toys, floats, covers, and other loose accessories.
Grills & Outdoor Equipment: Secure grills, lawn equipment, wheelbarrows, and garden tools.
Tree Limbs: Check for loose, broken, or dead branches that could fall during high winds. Arrange professional removal if needed and safe to do so.
Park cars away from tree limbs that could fall.
Drainage Areas: Remove leaves and debris from storm drains, catch basins, and downspout outlets to help prevent flooding.
Irrigation Systems: Turn off automatic irrigation schedules if heavy rainfall is expected.
Gates & Fences: Make sure gates are properly latched and loose fence sections are secured.
After the Storm
Once conditions are safe, inspect your property for fallen branches, scattered debris, clogged drains, and landscape damage. Avoid standing water near electrical equipment and never approach downed power lines.
Taking a little time to prepare can help prevent unnecessary damage and make cleanup much easier.
Stay safe!
