Geothermal is real. It is not the right system for every property around Union.

Cracked lips by January. Waking up with a dry throat. Static shock every time you touch a doorknob.

Those can be signs of very dry indoor air, something that commonly becomes more noticeable during cold weather.

Here's what's happening: cold outdoor air contains less moisture, and when that air enters your home and is heated, its relative humidity drops. The furnace itself isn't removing moisture every time it runs, but heating dry winter air can leave indoor relative humidity uncomfortably low.

A portable humidifier can add moisture to a limited area. A whole-home humidifier installed with a forced-air HVAC system can add moisture to the air distributed through the home's ductwork. Depending on the system, a humidistat or other control regulates operation around a selected humidity setting.

Our certified technicians have been helping Franklin County families stay comfortable since 1957. Indoor air quality is part of that.

If your home feels uncomfortably dry every winter, it's worth finding out whether humidity control makes sense for your home.

“It was working fine last week and now it's just blowing air.” We hear this during cooling season, and there are several reasons a ductless system can suddenly stop cooling.

One possible cause is refrigerant loss. Improperly made flare connections or other leaks can allow refrigerant to escape over time, eventually reducing or stopping cooling.

Another possibility is a condensate drainage problem. A clogged or improperly installed drain can cause water problems, and systems equipped with condensate safety controls may shut down when a drainage issue is detected.

Restricted airflow can cause trouble too. A dirty filter or evaporator coil can reduce airflow and cooling performance and, in some conditions, contribute to coil icing.

Electrical problems are another possibility. Incorrect wiring, improper circuit sizing, damaged components, or control-board problems can all interfere with operation.

After nearly 70 years of working in Union-area homes, we know that a system that “just stopped” needs a proper diagnosis. Sometimes installation is part of the problem. Sometimes it's maintenance, a component failure, or another issue.

The goal is to find the actual cause — not guess from the symptom.

Nobody is drilling a mile down to heat a house in Union.

A geothermal system is a ground-source heat pump. It transfers heat between the home and the ground through a buried loop system. In winter, it moves heat from the ground into the home. In summer, it moves heat from the home back into the ground.

Because it exchanges heat with the ground rather than outdoor air, its performance isn't affected by outdoor air temperature in the same way as an air-source heat pump. The upfront installation cost is typically higher, and the property, soil conditions, available space, and loop design all help determine whether a system is practical.

Most shops order ductwork. Lakebrink builds it.

Not since 1957, though. Herb Lakebrink started the business in commercial refrigeration. Lakebrink later added in-house sheet metal fabrication, and today the Union shop uses automated equipment to fabricate custom ductwork.

Fit is the point. Poorly sized or designed ductwork can contribute to uneven temperatures and airflow problems, and replacing the furnace alone won't necessarily correct a duct-system issue.

If one room is always the complaint, ask about the ductwork before assuming the equipment is the problem.

You spent three weeks comparing mini-split brands. You read every review. You picked a good one. Then you handed the job to the lowest bidder.

That's where mini-split problems can begin — not necessarily with the equipment, but with the installation.

Several things can go wrong when installation quality doesn't match equipment quality: improperly routed refrigerant lines, incorrect refrigerant charging, an outdoor unit installed without adequate airflow or required clearances, electrical work that doesn't meet the equipment's requirements, and condensate drainage that isn't properly pitched or installed.

Some installation problems show up quickly. Others may appear later as reduced performance, higher energy use, leaks, icing, or equipment problems. Warranty coverage can also depend on the manufacturer's terms and installation requirements.

The first cold night is often when a furnace that has been sitting through the warmer months goes back to regular work.

A furnace's heat exchanger helps keep combustion gases separate from the home's circulating air. Damage to the heat exchanger or problems with the combustion or venting system can create a safety concern. And carbon monoxide itself is colorless and odorless — you cannot rely on smell to detect it.

A seasonal heating check at Lakebrink includes inspecting the heat exchanger, checking combustion and flue venting, and testing safety controls.

Most homeowners know they're supposed to schedule a furnace tune-up before heating season. But many don't know what actually happens during one.

At Lakebrink, a furnace tune-up includes much more than a quick filter check. Our maintenance checklist includes inspecting the filter and heat exchanger, cleaning and adjusting burners, checking combustion, inspecting electrical connections, testing safety controls, checking the blower, and verifying proper flue operation.

A dirty filter can restrict airflow, make the system work harder, increase energy use, and contribute to equipment problems.

For gas furnaces, burner combustion and venting matter too. Improper combustion or venting can affect both efficiency and safety, which is why these components are part of a professional heating-system inspection.

We also check electrical connections, blower operation, safety controls, and the system's heating cycle to identify problems that may need attention.
