The car never left the garage. It just changed floors.

Boston Police are investigating a motor vehicle larceny inside a Boston hospital parking garage — sometime between 6:45 p.m. Sunday and 7:45 a.m. Monday. The vehicle turned up on a different level with items missing (BPD Community Alert, Sept. 7).

Nothing got forced at the gate. The gate was never the point. Most garages aim everything at the entrance and leave the other four floors to themselves.

Nobody broke in. He had the account.

A former Massachusetts housing authority director used the agency's Home Depot account and a corporate card on his own master bathroom, then labeled the spend in the books as work on its rental units — $6,200, per the U.S. Attorney's Office (Boston.com, Sept. 2). He is charged with wire fraud and repaying it under a deferred prosecution agreement.

No alarm trips on an approved purchase. No camera flags a line item.

Your controls face the parking lot. This one left through the front door holding a receipt.

Nobody called in a felony. Somebody noticed a missing plate.

Boston Police ran scooter and moped enforcement on Washington, Franklin and Hawley Streets downtown on Tuesday. One bike had no plate. That detail turned into four active warrants and a fentanyl trafficking charge. The other arrest that night started with two people reporting a man who wanted to look inside their bags. (BPD District A-1, Sept. 1)

Neither one started with a crime. Both started with something small that was wrong.

Nobody on your staff is going to spot a burglary. They are going to spot the van that has been in the lot too long — if somebody is actually looking.

Nobody hacked the credit union. Somebody walked up to it.

Vermont State Police say an ATM at 802 Credit Union in Rochester was broken into Sunday between 10 p.m. and midnight — $18,420 gone. The listed charges: grand larceny AND access to a computer for fraudulent purposes.

Two crimes. One machine. Your NVR, your access panel, your POS are computers too — and no firewall covers the six inches in front of them.

He didn't leave because anyone made him.

Boston PD is asking for help identifying the man who broke into the same Roxbury building three times in ten days — Aug. 11, Aug. 15 and Aug. 20 (BPD Community Alert, Aug. 26). On the 15th, inside a fifteen-minute window, he made several unsuccessful attempts at a bicycle, then walked back out on his own schedule.

A lock decides what he gets. Only a response decides how long he has.

Fifteen fi****ms walked out of one Middleborough break-in.

Getting them back took three weeks, two states, two ATF field offices, a federal warrant, cell-site data, ALPR and privately owned cameras. All 15 recovered — Middleborough Police, announced Aug. 25.

That's what recovery costs. Your break-in doesn't get a federal task force.

BPD's own year-to-date numbers, Jan 1 - Aug 23: commercial burglary 272 → 223 citywide. Downtown fell 85 → 41. East Boston went 5 → 12. Hyde Park, 1 → 9.

Same city. Opposite directions. An average never showed up to a break-in.
