Spindle-shaped bag structures on your trees belong to an insect pest known as bagworm. This is a caterpillar that builds the bag structure by feeding on foliage and sticking little pieces arounds its body with woven silk. This activity creates a bag structure the pest wears as it moves and feeds. Eventually, the caterpillar tethers the bag to a branch and it serves as a cocoon.

Preferred hosts of bagworms include conifers, arborvitae, juniper and white pine, but they feed on many different species. Severe infestation can result in defoliation and damage to the host plant.
