Termite damage is quiet. It happens inside the wood, and often nobody notices until only a thin skin of wood is left.

Signs to look for before it gets this far:
• Wood that sounds hollow when you tap it
• Mud tubes on walls and foundations
• Droppings like sawdust or coffee grounds
• Paint that blisters

Drywood termites live inside the timber itself and need no soil at all. Their dry, seed-like droppings are the giveaway.

See one cockroach in your kitchen? If it's a female, she may be carrying thirty more. Here's what you're dealing with.

Most of the time you won't see them. They hide by day in warm, dark, damp cracks, and wet summers suit them. What you find are the signs:
• dark droppings or smears
• shed skins and egg cases
• a bad smell

Small one or big one?
• The German cockroach is about 1.5 cm, light brown, with two dark stripes behind the head. It lives indoors, in kitchens and bathrooms, and breeds faster than any other cockroach in our homes.
• The American cockroach is about 4 cm, reddish brown, and comes up from drains and sewers.

In a kitchen, that matters: cockroaches can carry bacteria that cause food poisoning, like salmonella, and their droppings may trigger asthma attacks.

Look after a building, a complex or a business? Here's a 5-minute termite check for after the first good summer rains:

• Lights and window sills: shed wings
• Foundations and walls: mud tubes
• Doors and windows: sticking
• Paintwork: blistering
• Timber: a hollow sound when tapped, droppings like sawdust

Underground termites reach your roof timbers through mud tubes about a pencil wide. Drywood termites live inside the timber itself and need no soil at all.

The damage is quiet: often nobody notices until only a thin skin of wood is left. And harvester termites come out in daylight to cut grass, and can strip a lawn.

Three signs the colony is there: wings on the sill, mud tubes on a wall, wood that sounds hollow.

This is a termite queen. She can live for decades and lay thousands of eggs a day, and you will never see her. A colony can grow to millions.

What you do see is the swarm. After the first good summer rains, flying termites gather around the lights. They are the colony's future kings and queens, and by morning their wings are on the window sill.

Termite soldiers have jaws so big they cannot feed themselves; the workers feed them. Their only job is to defend the colony, mostly against ants.

So what do termites eat? Dead plant material: wood, grass, paper, anything with cellulose in it. Some South African species even farm a fungus underground to digest it for them.

A soldier termite's jaws are so big that it can't feed itself. The workers feed it. Its only job is to defend the colony, mostly against ants.

A termite colony has three kinds of termite:
• Workers: they build, feed the others, and are the only ones that eat the wood
• Soldiers: they defend
• The king and queen: they breed

Is it an ant or a termite? Check three things:
• Feelers: a termite's are straight and beaded; an ant's are elbowed
• Waist: a termite has no pinched waist
• Wings: a termite's four wings are all the same size

Most of a termite colony never sees daylight. The workers are pale, soft and 4 to 15 mm long, and they are the only ones that eat the wood.

Flying ants or flying termites? After the first summer rains, flying termites gather around the lights, and it's easy to mistake them for ants. Here's how to tell them apart:

• Feelers: a termite's are straight and beaded; an ant's are elbowed
• Waist: a termite has no pinched waist; an ant does
• Wings: a termite's four wings are all the same size; an ant's front wings are longer

Both drop their wings after flying, so if you only find bodies, check the waist and the feelers.
