Shortlisted Baileys Verge Awards entrant Lana from North Perth has transformed 40 metres of lawn into a thriving native wonderland that is bursting with colour, wildlife and biodiversity.

When Lana moved into her 1930s Federation home eight years ago, she set out to create something truly special. Since removing the traditional grass verge, she has planted an incredible 350 local Western Australian native plants, achieving an impressive 96% success rate along the way.

Today, the verge is a vibrant, waterwise garden that provides year-round colour through a diverse mix of flowering natives and striking foliage. More importantly, it has become a haven for wildlife. Bees, birds and even endangered black cockatoos regularly visit, turning what was once a strip of lawn into a valuable habitat in the heart of North Perth.

Lana's passion for native gardening demonstrates the powerful impact verges can have on local biodiversity while also creating beautiful, climate-appropriate landscapes. The garden's success has not gone unnoticed, having featured on Gardening Australia and earning recognition as a Town of Vincent Verge Award winner.

Now retired and enjoying life in the garden, Antonietta has transformed her verge into a colourful and welcoming feature of the neighbourhood. Throughout the year, the garden is constantly changing, with birds of paradise, daisies, agapanthus, frangipanis and many other easy-care favourites each taking their turn in the spotlight.

One of the garden's most-loved features is a pair of sculptured crocodiles, which have become a favourite with local children who often stop to admire them and pose for photos. It's these unique touches that make the verge such a memorable part of the streetscape.

Designed to be beautiful yet low maintenance, Antonietta's verge thrives with simple care. Annual mulching, sensible watering and letting nature take its course have created a resilient garden that continues to reward with colour and interest year after year. As a Year 2 teacher, Morag spends her days surrounded by the energy of young children. Gardening provides a different kind of joy, a chance to slow down, get her hands in the soil and enjoy the mindfulness that comes from watching plants grow and seasons change.

A true labour of love, every aspect of this stunning verge has been created and maintained by Morag herself. From designing the layout and improving the soil to planting, propagating, pruning and caring for more than 20 trees, her passion is evident in every corner.

Blending native, succulent and Mediterranean planting with deciduous and evergreen trees, the verge is full of depth, texture and seasonal interest. There is always something flowering, changing or catching your eye, creating a garden with its own unique personality.
