External caulking on natural stone ,one of the most overlooked details on a home, and one of the most important.
Stone moves. It expands in the heat and contracts in the cold, and the joints between it have to move with it. When those joints are filled with something rigid, they crack, and once water gets in behind stone cladding you're looking at staining, efflorescence, and eventually stone that lets go from the wall.
The sealant choice matters just as much. The wrong product can permanently stain natural stone acid-cure sealants attack it, and cheaper products can bleed oil into the edges of the joint. Done properly it's a neutral-cure, non-staining, low-modulus sealant, backing rod behind it, and the correct depth-to-width ratio so the joint can actually stretch.
Done right, it lasts. Done cheap, you're back in twelve months.
