Meet the ACS Team with Project Coordinator, Maia Schumacher.

A Red Seal Journeyman Carpenter with 12 years of construction industry experience, Maia also holds a Bachelor of Commerce in Entrepreneurial Management and has completed her ACSA auditor training.

Her background and skillset give her unique insights into her projects. She's known for identifying critical items, mitigating risk, and understanding projects from start to finish.

Maia is an avid climber and is a strong runner/trail runner.

Our impact goes far beyond business. We're deeply invested in the Bow Valley communities.

From being a sponsor of CAMBA to supporting minor hockey, the Eagles, an adult softball team, the Canmore Golf Course, RMA, the Food Bank, Bow Valley Pride, BOWDA, BVTA, and the Canmore Area Health Care Foundation, our contributions reach across sports, arts, health, and local initiatives.

We’ve also supported numerous charity golf tournaments and continue to donate our time, expertise, and team resources to projects with organizations like CCH and the Legion.

While it’s challenging to capture every contribution, the consistent thread is our commitment to giving back and helping community-driven initiatives succeed.

Beamer's Coffee Bar has been a Bow Valley icon since 1994, when Michael Beamer opened the original shop on Bow Valley Trail. Darren Boucher joined the business as co-owner in 2002.

In 2019, the café secured a spot at The Shops Of Canmore, partnering with ACS on the build. The project was 2,200 square feet, with a budget of $427,000.

Looking back, there’s one detail that stands out most for ACS Founder & CEO, Steve Ashton: ACS was finishing the café’s interior while the building’s landlord was still constructing the base building around it. Instead of waiting, the team roughed in the space early and had the interior done before the town had even issued the occupancy permit.

“We were there, we were helpful, and we got it done,” says Steve. “As soon as the town signed off on The Shops of Canmore and it was ready to open, well, Beamer’s was ready to open too. And as soon as they started paying rent, there was cash flowing.”

ACS’s commitment to the timeline was obvious. But paying attention to the company’s other needs was important too. “We treated that job with the same rigour we would bring to a multimillion dollar build,” says Steve. “Clear communication, no surprises on budgets, and we hit the schedule they needed.

We offer an integrated design-build delivery model for clients who want a single, accountable team from pre-construction planning through to project completion.

Rather than managing separate contracts with a design team and a general contractor, and dealing with the communication gaps that can develop between them, our design-build clients work with one team, one contract, and one point of contact throughout the entire project.

Design-build is a project delivery method in which the owner contracts with a single entity, the design-builder, to provide both architectural and engineering design services and construction.

This differs from the traditional design-bid-build model, in which an owner first hires a designer and then separately selects a contractor through a competitive bidding process.

In the design-build model, the contractor is involved from the earliest stages of design. This means construction knowledge informs design decisions in real time, reducing the risk of costly design changes during the build phase. It also means the schedule can be compressed: construction can begin on completed portions of the project while design continues on others.

Recently, conversations about “supporting local businesses” have become more visible, shaped in part by broader trade disputes and supply chain pressures. Often these conversations focus on retail shops and restaurants, important contributors to the character and culture of our mountain communities.

But local service businesses, including construction, play an equally critical role in sustaining our towns and enabling future growth. These are the businesses that build, maintain, and adapt the spaces we all rely on every day.

The Bow Valley face unique challenges when it comes to construction, from complex regulations and environmental considerations to significant logistical constraints and rising costs. At the same time, recent discussions at Banff Town Council highlight the importance of balance, recognizing that both independent and larger businesses contribute to economic resilience.

Supporting local, in this context, means understanding the full ecosystem of businesses that keep our communities functioning and thriving, and ensuring they can continue building for the future. With over 33 years of experience in the construction industry, 25 of those as an owner and operator, Mike brings deep expertise in both residential and commercial construction management.

He leads labour coordination on large projects and works closely with subcontractors and trades to ensure efficient project ex*****on. Mike’s hands-on leadership supports strong collaboration across field teams, contractors, and trades, helping projects run smoothly from start to finish.
