Converting raw sewage into precious resource, Vancouver's Sen̓áḵw development aims for low-carbon future / Vancouver Sun

The Vancouver company that developed Sen̓áḵw’s district energy centre, Creative Energy, says this is likely North America's most efficient energy system and one of the first large-scale, net-zero housing projects in the world.

The Sen̓áḵw development features a low-carbon energy system designed, built and operated by Creative Energy. Pictured is Keith Bate, director of engineering for Creative Energy, in the sewage heat recovery room.

Coldstream getting millions to install sanitary sewer infrastructure to more than 110 properties

The District of Coldstream is getting more than $6.97 million for sewer infrastructure.

The district is using its funding to install sanitary sewer infrastructure to more than 110 properties that are currently on septic systems.

The federally funded Strategic Priorities Fund program supports infrastructure projects that are beyond the financial capacity of a single local government fund, under the Build Communities Strong Fund (BCSF) Community stream in BC

“This project will aid in the reduction of nutrients flowing into Kalamalka Lake, a major source of public drinking water to North Okanagan communities, as well as provide opportunities to address the housing shortage in BC by allowing development on residential lots that was previously restricted due to the unavailability of sanitary sewer,” the municipality said in a press release.

On July 30, the federal and provincial governments along with the Union of BC Municipalities announced a federal investment of more than $152 million to support 54 community infrastructure and capacity-building projects. The Coldstream Sanitary Sewer Infill Project is one of the 54 recently announced projects.

"This funding is a significant investment in the future of Coldstream and will deliver benefits that extend well beyond the installation of sanitary sewer infrastructure. By connecting more than 110 properties to sanitary sewer, we are taking an important step toward protecting the health of Kalamalka Lake, a vital source of drinking water for our region,” said Mayor Ruth Hoyte.

“At the same time, this project will help unlock housing opportunities by enabling development on residential properties where it was previously restricted due to the lack of sanitary sewer. We are grateful to the federal and provincial governments and UBCM for recognizing the importance of this project and for their investment in our community

Salt Spring eyes joining CRD septic scheme

Salt Spring’s local Islands Trust trustees want the entire island to be added to the Capital Regional District’s (CRD) sewage system regulatory program, and are making an official request to that end — asking the CRD director to start the process that could eventually establish mandatory maintenance, regular pump-outs, record-keeping and enforcement provisions for all septic tanks.

The Local Trust Committee (LTC) voted Thursday, July 9 to make the request, after trustees had earlier asked staff to explore options for introducing some regulatory scheme after a term seemingly filled with exemptions. LTC chair Tim Peterson said partly due simply to the nature of island geography, they were frequently asked to approve setback variances around septic systems.

Millions of litres of raw sewage were released into the Strait of Georgia on July 2 after a major equipment jam at the Iona Island Wastewater Treatment Plant in Richmond. Metro Vancouver diverted the wastewater 7 km offshore via a deep-sea outfall for over three hours before resuming normal operations. Here is the latest information on the incident and local water quality:The Cause: Rocky debris and sediment jammed the screening equipment, requiring an emergency shutdown of the plant's screening systems.Public Health: Metro Vancouver and Vancouver Coastal Health noted that early modeling indicated no significant risk to public health, though routine water monitoring at local recreational beaches remains underway.Ecological Concerns: Local ecologists have expressed worry regarding the food chain impacts. The incident also highlights existing issues at the aging Iona plant, which continues to operate on primary treatment while awaiting planned upgrades
