Deep gouge in a veneered MDF board? Don’t scrap it just yet!

The problem with a deep gouge in veneer is that you can’t simply sand it out, as you’ll go straight through the veneer and expose the MDF underneath.

Here’s a little trick to save it…

Spray a little water over the damaged area and apply a hot iron.

The heat and moisture help the compressed wood fibres swell and spring back, lifting the damaged area.

Once it’s dried, you can carefully sand the area back to a smooth finish.

A simple trick that can save an otherwise ruined board!

Give this one a save – you never know when you’ll need it!

How have I only just discovered these?! 🤯

These are Swedish shelf brackets from Häfele, and they’re brilliant for fitting shelves into pigeon holes and cupboards.

I’d never used them before, but having tried them on this job, I’m a convert. Thanks to Bobblehat

The shelf simply slides into place, giving a really neat finish without visible fixings through the sides.

Sometimes it’s the little bits of hardware that make a job so much easier.

Cherry veneer sprayed with a satin varnish bringing out the natural colour, depth and grain without making it look overly glossy. This is showing the varnish wet just after spraying.

Smooth, even and you can really see the veneer come alive.

Would you go satin or matt?

Deep gouge in veneered sheet? Don’t bin it!

If the veneer isn’t broken, you can often bring the crushed fibres back up with water + steam.

Wet the damaged area
Apply steam/heat carefully
Let it dry fully
Sand smooth

Saved me a sheet and potentially a lot of money.

Save this for the next time you put a nasty dent in veneer!

Built this run of furniture with push-to-open doors and drawers, keeping the whole thing clean and handle-free.

The drawers are fitted with Blum push-to-open, soft-close runners, so you get that satisfying push-to-open action without sacrificing a smooth, soft close.

Everything sprayed for a clean, consistent finish using Tikkurila.

Sometimes less is more.

Making drawer boxes for Blum MOVENTO with TIP-ON BLUMOTION 👌

This is the way I make them up — simple, accurate and ready to fit straight onto the runners.

The key is getting the dimensions and clearances right from the start, especially when you’re working with MOVENTO.

Paintable edge banding .I like to do this on al my doors and draws. It cuts downs prep time when it comes to spraying. If you’ve painted mdf you know the time it can take to get the edges nice. This eliminates all that!

This is the other way of scribing . Just a compass set to the biggest gap and transfer the profile. Then jigsaw it out.
Any one use anything else apart from a jigsaw? Let me know!
