HAUS is a Glasgow based studio practicing architecture, masterplanning, and sustainable design.

We've recently submitted a planning application for the transformation of a former Art Deco department store at the prominent corner of Sauchiehall Street and Cambridge Street, Glasgow.

Originally built in 1929 to house the C&A department store, the building has a rich architectural history which has been central to informing our design approach.

Guided by the principles of Retention, Repair and Reinstatement, our proposals seek to celebrate the building's Art Deco heritage, restoring and reinterpreting elements of its original character while introducing a new chapter in its history.

The proposals will see the building transformed into a 144-bedroom boutique hotel, complete with a rooftop bar and restaurant and external rooftop amenity space offering views across the city.

Through the sensitive adaptation of this historic building, we hope to contribute positively to the ongoing regeneration of Sauchiehall Street and introduce a vibrant new hospitality destination to Glasgow's city centre.

Last week, HAUS attended 'Visioning Glasgow: Glasgow’s Public Art Strategy', joining discussions on the role of public art in shaping the city’s future as part of the wider City Development Plan 2 consultation.
Contributions from Paul Stallan of Stallan-Brand and Nathan Coley brought architectural and artistic perspectives to the discussion, with Nathan offering an engaging insight into his practice, influences and experience of working with statutory authorities. The event posed an important challenge to our profession: how do architects become genuinely collaborative designers?

For us, this begins with a willingness to invite different perspectives into the design process from the outset. Collaboration between artists and architects should be about developing ideas together, allowing artistic thinking to inform the character of buildings and public spaces, not simply introducing art once the architecture is resolved.

Our recent collaboration with Nathan on a proposal for the Union Street Meanwhile Use competition reflects that ambition. As Glasgow develops its city-wide Public Art Strategy, we look forward to exploring further opportunities to work with artists, strengthening the relationship between the city’s creative culture, its built environment and the everyday experience of those who use it.

The opportunity in the Highlands and Islands is clear. The challenge is now delivery.

HAUS Collective recently co-hosted the ‘Invest Highlands: The Journey to £100bn’ event at Inverness Castle in collaboration with Burness Paull, BIG Partnership and Porter Planning to discuss the most important opportunities and challenges facing the Highlands and Islands over the next decade and what needs to happen next.

Our co-founder Murray Henderson said “£100bn of potential investment is an extraordinary prospect, but its real value will be measured by what it leaves behind: homes, jobs, infrastructure, stronger communities and places people want to live.”

Guests included the people who will make it happen from renewable energy developers to housing developers, investors and local government.

This month, HAUS had the pleasure of hosting members of the Lighthouse Club Haaglanden in Glasgow as part of their study trip to Scotland.

The day was packed with visits exploring architecture, planning and construction across the city centre. We began with a tour of our recently completed residential development, Holland Park, before taking a walk through the city and stopping at one of Glasgow's iconic pubs, The Horseshoe Bar to give the visitors a taste of Glasgow .

Before lunch, the group enjoyed a presentation at Cafe Gandolfi by Raffaele Esposito, 'Designing Tomorrow's Glasgow', which provided a fascinating insight into the city's planning strategies and future development ambitions.

The day concluded with a tour led by Gary Watt of the Dundashill masterplan site, before the group continued to Edinburgh as part of their Scottish itinerary.

A huge thank you to everyone who helped make the day such a success, and to Peter Bense for reaching out to HAUS on behalf of the club and giving us the opportunity to be part of this valuable cultural and professional exchange.

We are pleased to announce the completion of Merchant City House, a Category B Listed Building on Miller Street in Glasgow, delivered for Unite Students.

Having been involved in the project since 2021, it has been rewarding to see this historic city centre building brought back to life through a collaborative effort from the wider project team.
An essential part of refurbishing historic buildings is finding solutions that comply with current fire, health and safety regulations while allowing characteristic features to be retained in their original form wherever possible. At Merchant City House, this remained a key focus throughout the design and construction process, with the existing staircase and atrium celebrated through sensitive restoration and light-touch design interventions.
We are proud to have played a role in preserving the building's character while helping to create a safe, functional and sustainable space for future use.

A huge thank you to everyone involved in bringing this project to completion.

📐CLAIRE MILNES: IN THE HAUS 📐

Introducing the newest HAUS member, Claire Milnes, who has joined our team as an Architect. We're looking forward to working with Claire as she progresses her career, bringing fresh experience and ideas to the studio.

Do you have specific interests or experience you're looking forward to building on at HAUS?
My background is in social housing in Glasgow. I'm interested in how we make good housing not just dwellings but communities. How shared spaces are designed so people actually want to use them and how a building mediates between the private world of the home and the public life of the street. That relationship between inside and out, between the individual dwelling and the wider city, is something fundamental.

How people inhabit and experience space translates well beyond residential too. Working across the range of project types HAUS takes on is something I'm genuinely looking forward to.

What's your favourite building or architectural style?
I don't have a single favourite, but two things really shape how I think about architecture. The first is the social housing movement of the 1960s, architects like Neave Brown.

The second is phenomenology, the idea that a building should engage you beyond the visual. The best example I've experienced firsthand is Lewerentz's church in Klippan, Sweden.

Returning to the University of Dundee as a guest reviewer for the Year Two final reviews, HAUS architect and Dundee alumnus Elliot was encouraged by the collective effort of students and tutors to create the best possible learning environment amid ongoing staffing challenges within the Architecture department.

Following reduced tutoring support experienced by students during their first semester in 2025, the progress made since Elliot’s last visit in December was clear to see, with both students and staff navigating a difficult year with professionalism and dedication.

This week HAUS welcomed 30 students from USC Sol Price School of Public Policy for a presentation and discussion centred on our Shawlands Arcade regeneration project.

Their visit to Glasgow forms part of an international planning and housing programme exploring comparative urban development between Glasgow and Los Angeles, with Shawlands Arcade serving as a live case study in discussions around planning systems, regeneration, housing delivery and the evolving role of the public realm.

The conversation offered an opportunity to reflect on how adaptive reuse, community-led thinking and mixed-use regeneration can contribute to more resilient and socially connected urban environments. For us, it was particularly rewarding to contribute to an international academic dialogue and to demonstrate how locally grounded projects can resonate within wider conversations on city-making and future housing models.

As a practice, opportunities like this reinforce the value of thoughtful, context-driven design and the broader relevance architecture can have beyond the boundaries of a single site or city.
