Why some kitchens feel closed-in despite having tall ceilings — and a dimension our team holds firm on at every kitchen design review:

Wall cabinets sit 450mm above the benchtop as standard. 600mm above the hob. That 450mm gap is the minimum for kettles, toasters, coffee machines, and stand mixers to sit on the bench and still be used.

Builders sometimes drop wall cabinets to 400mm to pack in more storage. It always feels cramped. Worth trading 50mm of cabinet for 50mm of headroom — you use it every single day.

Higher gap (500–600mm) looks more generous, but you start losing reach to the bottom shelf of the wall cabinet. 450mm is the proven compromise.

Batteries that might be dead. Warranty cards for appliances nobody owns anymore. A single chopstick. One birthday candle. A rubber band from 2016.

We open a lot of these when we renovate kitchens. Contents vary. The drawer's always there. No design brief has ever asked for one. Every house ends up with one anyway.

The coffee table proportion rule designers use — and one we apply on every living room we style:

Coffee table length = 50–66% of the sofa length. A 1800mm three-seater suits a 900–1200mm coffee table. A 2400mm sofa suits a 1200–1600mm coffee table.

Smaller than 50% and the coffee table floats — it looks lost against the mass of the sofa. Larger than 66% and it starts to feel like a dining table.

For sectionals and L-shaped sofas, the rule applies to the longer arm. Two smaller coffee tables side by side also work well for large sofas — together they read as one piece and give more flexibility to rearrange.

Sage and brass works in some kitchens and ruins others.

The combination is everywhere right now, which is exactly why it needs to be earned. In a flat-fronted modern kitchen with no architectural detail, sage cabinetry and brushed brass tapware looks like a colour swap on a builder's spec sheet.

In this scheme — shaker doors, white hexagon mosaic, soft brass tap — it works because the cabinetry detail does the heavy lifting. The colour and metal are accents, not the architecture.

Pick the cabinetry style first. Pick the colour and finish to suit. Not the other way around.
