Always a pleasure to watch our people achieve, and last night was no exception! So proud of you, Jeff Taputoro, for receiving your 17-year long service award at the Te Horo Fire Brigade Honours.
The values you show in your mahi clearly extend to your commitment to the wider community through your invaluable volunteering. It was wonderful to meet your whānau and having them there to support you on such a special occasion!

🚧 HARRIS ROAD | EMERGENCY RESPONSE & REINSTATEMENT 🚧

A challenging project, quick thinking and a great example of collaboration!

Following a significant rainfall event, Harris Road experienced extensive erosion beneath an existing gabion retaining wall, with undermining reaching depths of up to 1.7 metres in places.

Mills Albert was called upon to mobilise quickly, working collaboratively with Porirua City Council and ENGEO Consultants to develop and deliver a practical design-and-build solution.

And this was certainly no ordinary repair!

With challenging access, a confined stream environment and an existing structure requiring careful support, our team had to think quickly on their feet, adapt to changing conditions and ensure the design and construction methodology worked hand in hand.

Environmental and ecological considerations were a key part of the planning and delivery. Working within an active waterway required a carefully considered approach to managing stream flows, protecting the surrounding environment and minimising disturbance during construction.

Our construction team worked closely with our in house environmental and ecological specialists, to ensure practical engineering solutions could be delivered while appropriately managing the sensitivities of the stream environment.

The works involved:

🔸 Temporary works and structural propping
🔸 Temporary stream diversion and water management
🔸 Complex formwork and concrete construction
🔸 Reinstatement of support beneath the existing retaining wall
🔸 Environmental and ecological planning integrated into construction activities

This project was a great example of what can be achieved when practical experience, engineering expertise and environmental awareness come together.

A big thank you to Porirua City Council and ENGEO Consultants for their collaboration and support throughout the project.

A special thank you also goes to the residents of Harris Road for their patience, understanding and cooperation while these works were undertaken. Your support was genuinely appreciated.

And of course, a huge shout-out to the Mills Albert team and our internal specialists for their hard work, adaptability and commitment to finding solutions and getting the job done.

With the works completed, it was only fitting to bring our fancy BBQ to site for a well-earned feed! 🌭🔥

Papawai Stream is one of Wellington’s few remaining natural urban streams, located in Mount Cook and runs through Prince of Wales Park. It carries stormwater through the area and is home to aquatic life, such as kōkopu and kōura. Heavier and more frequent rainfall has contributed to erosion along the stream bed, washing sediment into the stormwater network and increasing the risk of blockages and flooding.

We’ve strengthened the stream banks and installed an engineered wetland system for our client Tiaki Wai to help reduce erosion, manage sediment and improve the resilience of the stormwater network, while supporting the stream’s natural environment.

Now, along with the passionate community group, there is a planting day organised by the team Tiaki Wai Saturday 17 October, from 10am to 2pm to celebrate the project end. Event details 👉 https://www.facebook.com/share/1BvBwn9Ybg/

There are around 800 plants ready to go in the ground. The planting will help support a healthier stream environment, providing habitat for native wildlife and helping protect this special part of Wellington. Sturdy boots are recommended but spades will be provided!

Mana – we stand behind our work and alongside our people, we show respect in how we lead, deliver and represent our name.

In 2025 we ran several intakes of our Mills Albert Pathways (MAP) programme with the Ministry of Social Development (MSD), providing opportunity to our youth and others vulnerable in the job market at the time. It’s a real credit to our relationship with the work brokers and efforts to help support our MAP participants into these opportunities. Further acknowledgements to our team coming together and growing our MAP kaimahi into their civil careers.

Our Mills Albert whānau came together on Thursday to show that pride in our mahi and how we support each other when the current Prime Minister, and Minister for Social Development and Employment chose to do their press briefing here in our workshop as part of their wider press circuit.

Thanks to our team for working through the winter weather with all of the difficult wind, rain and wave conditions this site has thrown at them. They have persevered under these extreme conditions to build this seawall. We are proud of the professional manner in which the team have dealt with all of the challenges that come up on a project such as this.

We would also like to thank the public for their patience and support of our team on site.
