Arrival is part of the story we wanted to emphasize in the design of this modern cabin. A cypress wood boardwalk leading to the entrance makes the approach an intentional moment.

The three-bedroom cabin rests lightly on the land. It’s elevated on wood posts, giving the sensation that it’s nearly floating above the forest floor. The structure settles into the landscape, allowing the terrain to remain the main character.

Materiality is the “red thread” that runs through our Casa Catalpa project.
When we broke ground, we were struck by the vibrant, sienna-colored clay exposed beneath the future foundation. It’s a color often associated with the desert, yet here we were in the temperate rainforest of Southern Appalachia, leaving the site with rust-stained shoes. The clay is part of the region’s geological story, and part of its ancient tradition of pottery-making.
I wanted to carry that narrative indoors, and tiles are a natural place to begin. Throughout the house, every material and finish wink at one another. There’s a conversation between rooms.
Treating natural materials as a vocabulary for expressing intention is the part I enjoy most about designing interiors. It’s easy on the eyes, a pleasure to touch, and capable of evoking feeling. -Cass

Cooking with greda pottery is personal. I grew up with it in Chile. In fact, some of the dishes we use today in our kitchen in Asheville are the same ones from my childhood.

Greda is our go-to for casual, comforting meals — like pastel de choclo (Chilean corn pie), baked pasta, roasted chicken.

What’s not immediately obvious, unless you’ve cooked with it yourself, is that using greda feels almost mystical. Cooking becomes more tactile and aromatic, and the result is somehow more delicious.

The secret (or science) is in the clay’s mineral composition. It conducts gentle, even heat and imparts subtle earthy, smoky notes that make food taste the way it should.

There’s no learning curve. No buttons, no manuals, no kitchen gadget fatigue. Just make the dishes you already love and let greda do the rest. Lasagna develops those desirable golden crusted edges. Whole fish flakes effortlessly. Low-and-slow favorites — brisket, pernil, lamb shoulder — are juicer and fork tender.

As our Casa Catalpa project moves into the final phase of construction, the vision for how it communicates with the land is taking shape.

Before we broke ground, we hiked the site dozens of times. We observed the native plants each season. We noticed where the ferns and moss grow in cooler zones and where wildflowers and berries thrive in sunnier spots. Now we’re counting the days to start planting our kitchen garden, cut flowers, and food forest.

We’re grateful for the chance to collaborate with the talented designers and on this project.

Earth Day, the official launch of NANAI. 🌱

Nine months ago, we went back to Chile to meet with artisans we hoped to partner with for NANAI. We drove south from Santiago — past glacial lakes, dormant volcanoes, and more empanada stands than we could responsibly stop at.

Ten days, several workshops, and a few hundred kilometers of Patagonian highway later, our reason for starting NANAI crystallized.

Artisans we visited along the way received us like family. They pulled out chairs, served mate and sopaipillas, and invited us to linger — and come back the next day. They wanted to know who we were and to see how deep we were willing to go. The Mapuche women talked about the living world, past and present, as a single fabric. Ancestors, community, nature, craft – it’s all connected.

That’s the spirit of what we’re offering. The projects we design and the products we bring from Chile are intentionally made to encourage connection to the earth and to other humans.

Shop launch updates ~

Our online shop goes live Wednesday! To celebrate Earth Day, every order comes with heirloom seed packets from our favorite seed company . Asheville locals – you can select free local pickup at and . We’re so thankful for our local business pals for partnering and supporting.

We also just added something to the stock we’re really excited about: a small collection of runners (pictured) co-designed with Cristina Blanco, a master weaver in Chile. They’re made with soft wool and natural plant dyes. We’re calling them “runners” because we want you to play and use them however you please, not just for the tabletop. Think of them as a textural element to add softness and tactility to any surface – layered on a bench, thrown on a chair, or draped over your shoulders on a chilly evening.

We can’t wait for you to see what we’ve been curating this past year. See you Wednesday!
