The future of the trades starts with students like these.

We joined Austin NARI and the Austin NARI Workforce Development Foundation as scholarships were awarded to local students pursuing their next chapter in the trades.

The Clarence Guerrero Memorial Scholarship Award is especially meaningful to CG&S. It is named for Dolores Davis’s father, who began his career as a carpenter, following in the footsteps of his father and his father before him.

For Dolores, a founding member of the Workforce Development Foundation, the award carries that family history forward by helping students take their own first steps into the trades.

Congratulations to this year’s scholarship recipients! Your hard work deserves to be celebrated, and we’re proud to have been there for the moment.

Special thanks to , the Austin NARI Workforce Development Foundation, Leander ISD, and Hays CISD for continuing to support students, trades education, and the next generation of builders.

The Work, In Progress.

Before the final surfaces go in, the built-ins begin to define the project.

Cabinetry is fitted, openings are trimmed, storage is worked into the architecture, and the rooms begin to show the decisions behind them.

This is the stage most people never see cleanly: not finished, not styled, but fully underway.

Some homes move from rendering to reality with relative ease. This one had to be carefully built into the land.

Perched above the Blanco River, The Lighthouse rises from a steep bluff with concrete columns, steel beams, and cantilevered framing extending toward the valley below.

Inspired in part by Virginia Woolf’s “To the Lighthouse” and Le Corbusier’s chapel at Ronchamp, the design turns a difficult site into something luminous: steel, glass, rough-hewn wood, and long views shaped by the river valley.

A rendering can show the vision. The build is where that vision has to hold.

Solutions in Design: Life on a Grade

The backyard had the ingredients: a pool, a view, room to gather, and a sport court down the hill. But the pieces did not quite speak to each other.

The existing pool sat 42 inches below the house, low enough to feel separate from daily life. From inside, it nearly disappeared from view. The sport court sat farther down the slope, screened by planting and difficult to reach.

The goal was not simply to add a new pool or pavilion. It was to bring the outdoor experience up to the level of the house, both literally and functionally.

Led by Senior Project Architect Gregory Thomas, CG&S reimagined the backyard as a connected outdoor living environment: a larger pool and spa, a covered pavilion, a serious outdoor kitchen, dining and seating areas, a fireplace, and clearer movement.

That simplicity took careful coordination. Slope, drainage, fill, guardrails, pool-deck elevations, roof tie-ins, construction access, and coordination with the pool contractor all had to be resolved before the space could feel effortless.

The finished pavilion is open, but substantial. Steel columns support a broad cedar ceiling over a full outdoor kitchen, dining area, fireplace, and lounge. Large-format concrete tile adds texture underfoot around wet areas, while outdoor-rated Dekton counters, metal siding, and a restrained material palette help the new work sit cleanly against the existing home.

One of the project’s most personal details came from the site itself. A live oak removed for the pavilion was saved by the homeowners and remade into the dining table and benches now used beneath the roof.

What was once a backyard of separate destinations now reads as one outdoor room, gathered at the level of the home.

Some homes carry a lifetime.

For most of her life, Mattie Freeman’s East Austin home has held family, memory, and the daily rhythms of a place she knows by heart. She lives there with her son Derek and her puppy Sassy, in a home that has long been a place of gathering.

Before losing her sight, Mattie loved cooking for family and friends. She also cooked professionally for AISD, making the kitchen an especially meaningful part of this next chapter.

Nominated by Interfaith Action of Central Texas through the Austin American-Statesman’s Season for Caring program, Mattie’s home is now part of a community effort shaped around care, access, and dignity.

CG&S Design-Build is honored to help create a kitchen and bathroom that will be easier for her to navigate, while making the home safer and better suited to the life inside it.

This is our sixth Season for Caring family, and the work continues to feel close to who we are: helping homes support the people who live in them.

More to come as this project takes shape!

This is the part of a home everyone meets first.

After a difficult earlier renovation of their beloved Govalle bungalow, this East Austin couple came to CG&S with a clear next chapter in mind: transforming the exterior with care.

Led by project architect Gina Andre, this renovation brought new life to the property from the outside in, restoring presence, warmth, and a clearer sense of arrival.

A refreshed exterior. A renewed first impression. A home ready for what comes next.

The real owners of the house.

For National Pet Week, we’re looking back at a few favorite four-legged appearances from CG&S projects.

They know the sunny spots first. They claim the best window views. They understand the porch, the kitchen path, the cool floor, and the quiet corner before anyone else has to explain it.

For the families who entrust us with their homes, pets are never just in the background. They are part of the daily life a home is built to hold.

Bespoke over luxury starts with priorities.

For this home, the starting point was clear: food and wine were central to how the client lived and hosted. With Matt working as a wine buyer, the design gave those priorities real weight, making the wine zone a focal point and reworking the kitchen to better support gathering and daily use.

The result is a home shaped by what matters most.

Your clients are already asking renovation questions. We’re here to help you answer them.

Today, we joined a group of local realtors for a practical conversation about helping clients better understand a home’s renovation potential.

Grounded in real Austin projects, the discussion focused on what’s possible, where complexity can hide, and how early guidance can make decisions clearer.

These are the conversations we value most: sharing what we know with the people helping clients make informed decisions about their homes.

The finished home is only one measure of a project.

Just as meaningful is the experience behind it: the communication, the care, the collaboration, and the many details carried from first meeting to final walkthrough.

A few reflections from the people who know these spaces best.
