Step inside Meadow House, aptly named for its location in Wyoming's picturesque Teton Valley.

The high-performance windows are a key part of the airtight building envelope, helping protect indoor air quality by reducing smoke infiltration and creating a healthier indoor environment. We're honored to be named a finalist in Metropolis Magazine's Planet Positive Awards for Aska's Animal Haus in the Use of Biobased Materials category.

The project is built with prefabricated straw panel construction by New Frameworks Natural Design/Build. While straw has historically been used in experimental builds, we elevated it to a high-performance, Passive House-compatible system, demonstrating that low-carbon, bio-based materials can meet rigorous energy-efficiency standards in extreme climates.

Introducing Aska’s Animal Haus, featured in The Architect's Newspaper.

Built with straw panel assemblies and guided by Passive House principles, the project offers a different approach to building in the Mountain West.

“The Mountain West is developing fast, and much of what’s going up, [Lindsay Schack] said, doesn’t always have the best building science behind it. Aska’s Animal Haus is her answer to that: a home where affordability, health, and environmental responsibility aren’t competing goals. ‘Once people understand what Passive House is and what it’s based upon, and what it gets you,’ she said, ‘there’s really no alternative.’”

Wellness begins in the foundation of your home.

Straw-based Structurally Insulated Panels (SIPs) are prefabricated, self-supporting wall sections filled with chopped, densely compressed straw inside a wood frame. Instead of foam, they use an agricultural byproduct with far lower embodied carbon.

The density of the straw helps resist fire spread and, because it is too densely packed, it does not attract pests. Panels are installed quickly, which is a major advantage in regions with short building seasons and limited labor. It is a smart evolution of straw-bale building, pairing natural materials with contemporary fabrication.

We’re AIA Small Project Design Knowledge Community Grant recipients!

The grant supports non-profit organizations that partner with architecture firms on community-based projects. We’re working with American Prairie to design a permanent cabin for their Field School, a program serving predominantly Indigenous communities. The project will provide shelter, create a space for gathering and learning, and support the growth of their cultural programs.

Designing for American Prairie asks you to pay attention to what the land teaches. For Lindsay Schack, it also reconnects her to the place that shaped her. Growing up in eastern Montana taught her resilience, respect for the land, and an appreciation for utility that still guides our work today.

The prairie’s harsh conditions demand durability, but they also invite a quieter kind of beauty. That balance is at the core of our approach and why Passive House principles continue to play such an important role in our practice.

Collaborating with American Prairie extends those early lessons. Lindsay reflects on this relationship and the values behind it in her essay for the American Prairie Journal.
