Have you ever wondered what a whole-house water filter actually does? 💧

One of the biggest misconceptions is that **one filter removes everything**. In reality, different water treatment systems are designed to solve different problems.

In our latest blog, we explain:
✔️ What sediment filters remove
✔️ What carbon filters remove
✔️ What they *don't* remove
✔️ The difference between a water filter and a water softener
✔️ How to know what your home actually needs

Understanding your water is the first step to choosing the right solution.

That water showing up in your basement after a storm could be coming from your **sump pump, gutters, foundation, floor drain, sewer line, or even a plumbing leak.**

Is your well pump turning on and off constantly? 🚨

That “clicking” every few seconds isn’t just annoying—it’s called short cycling, and it can lead to serious (and expensive) damage if ignored.

In this guide (on our website, under "Plumbing Blog"), we break down:
✔️ What short cycling is
✔️ The most common cause (hint: it’s usually your pressure tank)
✔️ Warning signs to watch for
✔️ When to call a professional

Catching this early could save you thousands on a full pump replacement.

Why is my water heater making noise?” 🤔

If you’ve been hearing popping, rumbling, or hissing sounds—you’re definitely not alone. This is one of the most common issues we see in homes around Easton and the Lehigh Valley.

👉 The most common cause: sediment buildup inside the tank. Over time, minerals settle at the bottom and harden. When the water heats up, it creates that rumbling or popping sound.

⚠️ When to take it seriously:
• The noise is getting louder
• You see rusty water
• There’s water around the unit
• Your water heater is over 8–12 years old

We recently checked a system in Phillipsburg making loud rumbling noises—turns out the buildup was too severe to flush, and replacement was the best option. If you’re unsure what your water heater is trying to tell you, feel free to reach out.

Ever wonder how your water heater actually works?

Most homes rely on either a traditional tank system or a tankless (on-demand) unit—and each one heats water in a very different way.

In our latest blog, we break it down in simple terms:
• How tank water heaters store and heat 30–80 gallons of water
• How tankless systems heat water instantly as you need it
• Important safety parts like the T&P valve and anode rod
• What warning signs to watch for before a breakdown

Knowing how your system works can help you avoid cold showers, leaks, and emergency repairs.

💧 How much does a water heater cost in Pennsylvania in 2026?

If your water heater is leaking, aging, or just not keeping up anymore, replacement cost is usually the first question homeowners ask.

The answer depends on a few things:

Tank vs. tankless system
Size of your home
Installation complexity
Efficiency upgrades

We put together a simple guide to help you understand what most homeowners in PA actually pay—and what factors can raise or lower the price.

Something we’ve been noticing a LOT lately…

Homeowners calling us for one issue—and then saying:
“My toilet has been making this weird noise…”
or
“My outdoor faucet has been dripping, but I figured it wasn’t a big deal.”

And honestly? That makes sense. They seem small.

But here’s the surprising part:
A running toilet can waste up to 200 gallons a day 😳
And a slow outdoor drip adds up faster than you think.

So I’m curious—

Have you noticed anything like this in your home lately?
• A toilet that randomly refills?
• A faint hissing sound in the bathroom?
• A spigot that never fully shuts off?

Something to keep an eye on, especially in the heat.

🚿 How long do water heaters actually last?

Most people don’t think about their water heater… until they suddenly have NO hot water 😬

Here’s the reality:
👉 Tank water heaters: 8–12 years
👉 Tankless water heaters: 15–20+ years

If your unit is over 8–10 years old, it might already be on borrowed time—especially with our local water conditions.

⚠️ Watch for these warning signs:

Less hot water than usual
Rumbling or popping noises
Rusty-looking water
Small leaks around the tank

We broke it all down in a simple article so you know what to expect (and how to avoid a surprise breakdown).

☀️ The Heat Isn’t Just Hard on You—It’s Hard on Your Plumbing Too

With this mid-May heat wave pushing temps into the 90s, your plumbing system is working harder than you think.

Here’s what’s happening behind the scenes:
🔹 Increased water use across neighborhoods can drop your pressure
🔹 Expanding soil can affect underground pipes
🔹 Water heaters may act inconsistently
🔹 Small leaks and worn parts become more noticeable

Many homeowners think something is “wrong,” but often it’s the system reacting to heat and demand.

At Applause Plumbing & Heating, we help catch these issues early before they turn into expensive problems.

If you’ve noticed pressure changes, slow fixtures, or anything unusual—now’s the time to check it out.
