Taken from a kayak on Sunday, looking up at the riverbank of the land in Enfield, NH where we plan to build our future home. I’ve been exploring the property and found so many wonderful native plants, but I think the buttonbush might be the one I was most excited to find already growing there. It was bustling with bumblebees and monarchs all morning.

Buttonbush (Cephalanthus occidentalis) is a great mid-size shrub for rain gardens and pond and wetland edges, but also does fine in normal, reasonably moist garden soil once established. It sports these funky, fragrant, spherical, late-summer blooms that are absolute pollinator magnets. The seed heads help feed the birds in winter, too!

Puffy clouds of Thalictrum pubescens in bloom in a client’s garden in Etna, NH. This is a great native perennial for moist, shady spaces where you want something tall and airy. Self-sows freely and brightens up dark spaces in the backs of beds.

Out here tagging and organizing plants for tomorrow’s Canaan Farmers and Artisans' Market and trying my best to ensure that no complimentary toad buddies come with any of the perennials I’m planning on bringing along. Picked up a van-load of shrubs for clients’ gardens from Native Plant Trust at Nasami Farm in Whately, MA today. Such a beautiful native plant nursery! All the gorgeous, healthy, 2-gallon native shrubs I bought were under $50 each, and they carry a lot of hard-to find straight species natives like inkberry holly and single bloodroot. Worth the trip to visit wherever you are!
