Question for all my fellow self-employed people… who do I hire to knock out MY projects and to-do list while I’m out helping everybody else knock out theirs? 🤣🤣

Because apparently I missed that part when I decided working for myself was a good idea.

It’s been a hell of a couple weeks. Seems like every time I cross one thing off the list, three more magically appear. Jobs to finish, estimates to get out, people to call back, equipment to figure out, paperwork to do… and somewhere in there I’m apparently supposed to remember my own s**t too. 😂

But all jokes aside, I wouldn’t trade it.

There are definitely days this business stresses me the hell out and days I feel like I’m just figuring it out as I go. Then there are days like today — wrap up a good project, stand back and look at what got accomplished, and remember how far this little business has come.

I started this wanting to make an honest living for my family, help people out, and build something of my own. Still a long damn way from where I want to be, but every job, every repeat customer, every referral and every person who trusts me with their property gets me a little closer.

So I guess tomorrow I’ll wake up, look at the never-ending list, pick something and keep on going. 😂

As always, thank you to everybody who has hired me, recommended me, shared my name or supported Cook’s along the way. It means more than you probably realize.

Been one of those weeks where every day has looked completely different 😂

Started off buried in scrap metal, old appliances and random junk. Huge shoutout to my buddy Coltin Wright with RiverCity LoadAway - Home Services for coming out and helping me load and haul a bunch of that mess. Definitely made life a whole lot easier.

Then rolled right into a couple commercial maintenance jobs at a couple Taco Bell locations, fence removal, repainting safety bollards, and getting a few things cleaned up around the properties.

Now I’m back into residential work trying to keep gutters, drainage, repairs and everything else moving before the weather decides to screw with the schedule again.

No two days are ever really the same doing this stuff, but that’s honestly one of the things I enjoy about it.

Just keep showing up, figuring it out, and moving on to the next one. 💪

Happy Friday from Cook’s Handyman & Property Solutions!

This week has been one of those weeks where plans changed about every day, but we kept moving forward.

✅ Got the work truck back on the road with a new battery and starter.
✅ Wrapped up another interior trim project.
✅ Finished another phase out at the rescue.
✅ Had the opportunity to spend a day helping my buddy Coltin with RiverCity LoadAway on a large property cleanout. Always good working alongside another local small business owner.

Now it’s time to shift gears and get ready for next week.

We’ve got concrete work, gutter projects, property cleanups, demolition, flooring, painting, and several new estimates on the schedule. We’re staying busy, and I’m thankful for everyone who’s trusted us with their homes and projects.

Some weeks everything goes according to plan.

This wasn’t one of those weeks.

Between truck problems, parts swapping, schedule changes, and trying to keep projects moving, it’s definitely tested my patience.

But that’s part of running a small business.

Today we knocked out a new set of stairs, made more progress at the dog rescue, and tomorrow we’re right back at it.

Huge thanks to my buddy Coltin with RiverCity LoadAway for lending a hand this week. Good people make hard weeks a little easier.

Appreciate everyone who’s been patient while I get the truck sorted out. We’ve got a busy couple weeks ahead and we’re looking forward to helping a lot more folks around Mid-Missouri.

One thing I’ve learned running a business is you don’t have to do it all alone. 🤝

Today I had the opportunity to work alongside Coltin from River City LoadAway while we kept making progress on the dog rescue project.

What stood out to me wasn’t just the work, it was the mindset.

He showed up ready to work, ready to help, and ready to build a relationship instead of looking at everyone as competition. That’s the kind of people I want in my corner.

At the end of the day, when local businesses support each other, everyone wins… especially the customer.

We still have a little more to finish at the rescue, but today was a good reminder that building connections is just as important as building projects.

Looking forward to working together again, brother. 🍻

Friday already? 😂

Another busy week of bouncing from one project to the next. Some days everything goes according to plan, other days you just figure it out as you go — either way, we keep moving.

I didn’t make a post Monday. I was too busy doing the work I’m supposed to be posting about. 😂

And I guess that’s not the worst problem to have.

One thing I’ve learned since going out on my own is that some of the best jobs aren’t always the biggest ones.

Sometimes somebody just needs a garage cleaned out. A pile of junk hauled off. A deck fixed before somebody gets hurt. A door replaced. Brush cleaned up. Or that random project that’s been sitting on the list for six months because they don’t know who to call.

Those jobs might only take me a few hours or a day, but to the person who’s been staring at it every day, finally having it done is worth something.

And truthfully, I like those jobs.

Show up. Figure out the problem. Do it right. Clean up. Move on to the next one.

Building this business has definitely taught me that you don’t need every job to be some massive project. There’s a whole lot of work out there that just needs somebody willing to show up and handle it.

So if you’ve got one of those “I’ve been meaning to get that done…” projects around the house or property, send it my way.

Another week in the books.

This week tested me in some new ways, but it was a good one.

Got to work alongside my best friend on probably the coolest cleanout we’ve done yet. There was so much history packed into this basement, and it was honestly pretty cool seeing pieces of somebody’s life as we worked our way through it.

Sadly, years of water intrusion had ruined pretty much everything down there. But along the way we found old family pictures, memories and a few things that deserved more than just ending up in a dumpster. We were able to set those aside and get them back to the customer, which was probably one of my favorite parts of the whole job.

It was a hell of a cleanout, but seeing that basement empty when we finished made all the work worth it.

Also got a couple decks repaired this week that had seen better days. One had settled nearly a foot and another had framing starting to fail. Got them lifted, repaired and back to being a whole lot sturdier than when I found them.

Made some progress out at the dog rescue too, squeezed in a couple estimates, hauled off the scrap from the cleanout, and somehow made it to Friday 😂

Definitely one of those weeks that reminded me there’s a lot more to this business than just fixing stuff and hauling junk. Every job is a little different, every property has a story, and every week seems to teach me something new.

Appreciate everyone who’s had me out, recommended my name, or helped keep this little business moving forward.

On to the next one. 🔨

One thing I’ve learned doing estate cleanouts… you never know what you’re going to find.

This week alone we’ve come across old TVs, a vintage Ouija board (that one’s staying right where it belongs 😂), boxes of old whiskey bottles, and somehow… paint cans with COOK printed on them. Guess my family really has been around the paint business longer than I thought.

The coolest part of jobs like this isn’t hauling everything away, it’s getting a glimpse into someone’s life. Every room, every shelf, every box has a story behind it.

Unfortunately, years of water getting into the basement took a toll. A lot of things couldn’t be saved, and some of it had started growing its own civilization. But it’s still been pretty neat getting to sort through a little piece of history before giving the property a fresh start.

Now… back to loading dumpsters.

Pretty sure I accidentally caught the sun in the dumpster this morning. 😂☀️
