This year's Homes by Architects Tour is expanding beyond the Twin Cities to feature two homes in Rochester, MN, including Orchard House! It is nestled between an apple orchard to the north and a wildlife management area to the south. The home is organized on an east-west axis for passive solar design, while aligning vistas from the home into the tree rows. A simple palette of corrugated siding, thermally modified wood planks, galvanized structure, and Douglas fir combine harmoniously to create a quiet presence on the landscape. Visit Home 12 on September 19 & 20!

When this family of five had outgrown their 1967 home designed by Mike McGuire, its architectural significance and the appeal of such a lush site, led them to seek an addition, rather than sell and move. A new link, containing a library and office space with stairs, connects the existing house to a new owner's suite above and family room and laundry below. Large windows in each new space frame views to the outdoors. Wood floors, trim and vaulted ceilings match the original design, and the exterior siding also follows the dark stain of the existing home, allowing it to blend in with the site. This home has a blend of classic and contemporary forms - A two-story passive-solar glass atrium highlights its circulatory heart and is surrounded by more traditional gabled forms, with window patterns of similar proportions. Inside, the large, open living area has custom millwork, flush doors and sliding panels to expand spaces and functions throughout. This Dutch Revival home was subtly expanded and extruded to add a little space to its 28-by-28 footprint. The unique cross-gambrel roofline inspired an extension of the form into the backyard, repairing visual access and connection to the rear yard, while satisfying current setback requirements. Upstairs, the owners gained a private bath and walk-in closet by pushing their light-filled primary bedroom out and over an expanded kitchen and informal gathering space. ⁠
