Jonathan Schloss / Architect Jonathan Schloss / Architect provides comprehensive services in architecture, interior design and planning. Creativity often takes the path of exploration.

Our work in the civic, commercial and private realms spans a wide range of scale and use, encompassing new construction as well as renovation. Our focus includes performing arts work, spaces for art and entertainment and renovation/restoration. Our goal in every project is to create quality work, and to realize the potential envisioned by our clients. With sensibilities equally aesthetic and pragmatic, we offer a refined use of scale and proportion, materials and light, history and site to promote the possibilities of use and quality of experience. Ultimately, it is our belief that improving our environment improves our lives. Each successful project is the result of a fine balance of creativity and experience. We achieve this balance in every phase of the commission by creating a strong working partnership with our clients, immersing ourselves in the architectural process and insuring that we establish and meet realistic project goals. To be successful, however, this exploration must be informed by experience. We generate ideas with our clients, exploring design options for program, form, space, materials and construction methods. We then evaluate those options through the lens of our experience. As Project Designer and Principal on each and every project, Jonathan Schloss’s professional experience provides insight that directs the entire process, employing a refined ability to interpret and accomplish the clients’ needs and desires. Our work seeks to forge strong connections to the place it inhabits and to the people who use it.

In an era where technology knows no bounds, the timeless connection between hand and mind, pen and paper, remains the heartbeat of every creative journey. Because even at the pinnacle of innovation, the magic of creation begins with a simple stroke.

The reception desk at the New Jersey Law Offices was fabricated from hardwood veneer and satin lacquer panels, with a stone counter mounted on steel plate. The desk sits against a backdrop of book matched wood veneer panels and a frosted glass clerestory.

Architecture is a story, shaped by concept, context, material, and history.

For this restoration, that meant looking beyond the surface: respecting the building's history, letting it belong to its Tribeca context, and introducing a new layer of identity.

The result isn't restoration. It's continuation.

Restoration doesn't start with a contractor; it starts with a sketch. Long before a construction drawing set exists, there's a pencil line: quick and imperfect. At 100 Hudson Street, that's where our understanding began.

The pencil is still an honest tool in our office.

Hugh Hardy would have turned 94 this Sunday. The Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts was the first cultural project I worked on with him at HHPA and the start of more than a decade working alongside him.

A few photos from that project, remembering him this week.
