Summer Leaf Drop!

Why are trees dropping leaves in the middle of summer? The recent stretch of extreme heat and dry weather has many trees shedding leaves earlier than usual. This is a natural survival response that helps trees conserve water during stressful conditions. The good news? If we receive some rainfall and cooler temperatures soon, many trees should recover just fine.

Here’s your landscape checklist for August, BUT please be safe!

Try not to be out in the hottest part of the day. Instead, do your garden work in the early morning or late evening to avoid high temperatures. Stay hydrated and protect your skin!

Some tasks to consider:

Plant daylilies.
Divide and transplant Louisiana iris, Easter lily, canna, liriope, ajuga, and Shasta Daisy.
Plant mums for fall blooms.
Water plants and turf deeply and infrequently.
Watch for garden pests and diseases.
Prune rose canes to encourage growth.

Limelight hydrangeas (Hydrangea paniculata) are really showing out this time of year! They thrive in full sun to part shade.

The quantity of flowers is incredible. The 6- to 12-inch-long flower heads are held upright on the plant. The flowers start off a chartreuse that is almost white, then change to bright, light lime. As fall approaches, the flowers start turning pink.

Soil pH does not affect the color of the flowers like it does with the blue or pink big-leafed hydrangeas. Any flowers left on the plant do provide winter texture and interest.

Limelight blooms on new wood, so prune in late fall or early spring. A medium pruning that removes one-third to one-half the plant size gives a better structure for large blossoms and the new season ahead. Feed your hydrangea in early spring as new growth resumes.
