"This isn't a trend for us; it's the baseline." That's how Larkspur Builders president Josh Grout described dark-sky compliance in a new feature on exterior lighting design.

The piece covers the shift toward layered lighting, shielded and downward-facing fixtures, warmer color temperatures, and lighting plans that are considered early rather than bolted on at the end. Grout described what that looks like on the ground in Marin County, where much of Larkspur's work falls under dark-sky rules and where there's now a push to have West Marin's 13 villages recognized as a Dark Sky Community. Meeting those requirements isn't extra work for the team; it's the standard they build to every day.

This 168-square-foot kitchen didn’t leave much room for error, especially in a century-old San Francisco Victorian with 11-foot ceilings and an appliance layout that had never quite worked.

That was the starting point for a recent renovation featured in , a collaboration between designer and Larkspur Builders. The homeowners wanted their kitchen to be a genuine gathering spot, not the makeshift arrangement they'd been living with, all while preserving the character of the historic home.

Larkspur Builders custom-fabricated the white oak cabinetry and solved the trickiest part of the renovation by rerouting new ventilation ductwork through the upper cabinets after the ceiling joists blocked a straight path from the relocated range. The finished kitchen leans into contrast: a stainless range and hood against warm wood cabinets, reeded glass at the door, dolomite counters, and handmade wall tile.

The takeaway? Don’t be discouraged by small spaces; instead, take advantage of what you have.

The shape of is starting to read. Two curved concrete pods anchor the entry while the addition rises behind them.

But from above, you get a sense of what we're working with: a sprawling Sebastopol property with mature trees, established landscaping, and the various structures threading their way into the middle of it all. This one's going to be something special.
