BACK TO SCHOOL | PROJECT SPOTLIGHT 2 OF 5 🍎

A new school doesn’t have to feel new to its neighborhood.

For Mary S. Boyd Elementary School, hdesigngroup and Hollis + Miller designed a modern learning environment that respects the history, scale, and character of Springfield’s Midtown neighborhood. Warm brick, thoughtful detailing, welcoming porches, and strong civic presence help the school feel connected to the community it serves.

Inside, flexible learning spaces, classrooms, fine arts areas, and shared gathering spaces support today’s students while celebrating Boyd’s long-standing place in the neighborhood.

At hdesigngroup, we believe great school design goes beyond function. It’s about understanding the community around it and designing a place that truly belongs there.

BACK TO SCHOOL | PROJECT SPOTLIGHT 🍎

As students across Springfield Public Schools head back to the classroom, we’re celebrating the places where learning happens—and the opportunity we’ve had to help shape them.

First up is Sunshine Elementary School, a school with a history stretching back to the days of a one-room schoolhouse near the end of the Civil War. In 2020, hdesigngroup helped write the next chapter in that story with a major renovation and 29,400-square-foot addition that doubled the school to 58,800 square feet. Designed to serve 350 students, the reimagined Sunshine Elementary brought together modern classrooms, special education spaces, art, music, a gymnasium, library, cafeteria, and collaborative learning areas—all while building upon the legacy of a school that has served generations of Springfield students.

We’re proud to design educational spaces that support students, teachers, and communities today—and are ready to grow with them tomorrow!

The April 2025 no-tax rate increase bond issue has already paid for the completion of window safety film at all buildings, HVAC upgrades at Price Elementary, and HVAC and audio upgrades at Republic Middle School, but the two major additions and renovations are under construction right now.

Rounding out our summer intern team is Lucas Wright, our third and final intern profile of the season.
Lucas will begin his fifth and final year this fall at Drury University Hammons School of Architecture. He brings positive energy to our team, along with attention to detail, creativity, and a strong desire to continue learning through real-world projects.

Lucas writes,
"My love for architecture began early, as a little kid with Legos and Lincoln Logs, and that same creativity and passion for design eventually led me into the field. Diving into projects at has given me the opportunity to see real designs come to life and learn more about the construction process from start to finish. Outside of the office, I love spending time with my family and friends, playing golf, watching sports, and trying new recipes with my fiancée. Everyone at H Design Group has welcomed me in and I am super excited to learn and grow as I continue my architectural career."

We’re excited to continue introducing our talented summer interns at !

Our second intern profile features Simon Ruck, who will be a Senior at this fall. Simon was drawn to H Design Group’s passion for building strong client relationships, as well as the camaraderie and collaborative culture within the office.

Simon writes, "I was drawn to architecture because of its unique role as a creative and problem-solving field and I want to help build people's dreams. When I am not working, you can find me in the books. I love to read, do research and to write. I'm very passionate about philosophy. You can also find me at the gym, outside playing sports or in the kitchen. So far at H Design Group, I've enjoyed working on a variety of projects and pushing myself to absorb as much as I can from my peers."

We are excited to welcome our talented summer interns to H Design Group! Over the next few posts, we’ll be introducing each of them and sharing a little more about what brought them to architecture and to our team.

First up is Samantha Donaldson, who will be a senior at Drury University Hammons School of Architecture this fall. Samantha was drawn to the hdesigngroup mission of “creating exceptional spaces,” and she brings with her a strong understanding of architecture, a creative perspective, and an eagerness to continue learning through hands-on experience.

“I was drawn to architecture because of its ability to combine creativity and technical detail to cultivate spaces that positively influence people and their communities. When I'm not working, you can find me close to the water. I love hiking with my dog, Maple, paddleboarding, and weekends at Table Rock Lake! I also love to travel! Studying abroad allowed me to visit six different countries, and I hope to see more of the world in the future. I love the diversity of experiences and projects that I have been able to be a part of so far, and I'm excited to continually challenge myself and learn more here at hdesigngroup!”

Bringing a fresh residential presence to one of Springfield’s corridors of revitalization, these communities are part of a growing, more connected environment linking Downtown Springfield neighborhoods, parks, schools, and destinations.

More than a place to live, The Glade and The Dale reflect continued investment in Springfield’s future.

H Design Group is proud to partner with I Love Springfield, MO! and Nabholz Corporation to help bring the new Route 66 Springfield Visitor Center to life in the heart of downtown.

Located at 318 Park Central East, directly across from the Gillioz Theatre and adjacent to the new Route 66 Birthplace Plaza, the 1,745-square-foot space creates a modern, interactive welcome center for visitors and locals alike—offering maps, guides, local recommendations, souvenirs, and inspiration for exploring everything Springfield has to offer.

Completed ahead of last weekend’s National Route 66 Centennial Kickoff Celebration, the new Visitor Center helps connect guests to Springfield’s restaurants, attractions, culture, and Route 66 history from one of the city’s most visible downtown locations.
