Ellington. Earlier this year, this back area of the property was planted with some green giant arborvitae, oriental spruce, and weeping alaskan cedar. The intent was to let the area naturalize but it was decided that more structure was needed to fit in with the rest of the yard. A new bed edge was cut and shrubs added, including sweetspire, red twig dogwood, p***y willow, pink azaela and korean spice viburnum. Fresh hemlock mulch to finish.

Stafford Springs. This was a fun project that involved re-using alot of plant material onsite. New bed spaces were created and edged with granite cobblestones. The property was loaded with all kinds of boulders and stone to work with. Stepping stone paths, landings, steps for the back slider and boulder accents dressed up the landscape. Various perennials were divided and replanted. A combination of mulch and 2-3" rounds were used as the ground cover. 3 drift roses and an inkberry holly were added as new plants. The downspouts were directed to flat stones used as splash blocks.

We are thankful for the opportunity to join Ellington Agway for their Day of Play again this year. We will have native plant information, live monarch caterpillars, and a bigger excavator this year for the kids to check out! We look forward to seeing you from 11-2 this Saturday.

This new home front landscape project in Manchester features mostly native plants, a combination of mulch and stone separated by black aluminum edging. The 2-3" rounds also have small boulders mixed in and a few large boulders were installed within the project. A new front walk was created out of Unilock beacon hill flagstone in granite fusion and Unilock camelot premier in charcoal was used as a border. A new larger trex step was built by JP Norton Construction LLC. to help bring the step into scale with the front porch. Various other details went into this project including a small little stacked stone pyramid, which wasn't originally part of the original design but ended up in the final outcome. Also a sump pump discharge line was re configured and hidden into the stone in the landscape bed.

New home landscape

South Windsor. This project was first created about 10 years ago, mainly comprising foundation planting beds and one along a back fence line. 10 years later the client was ready to spruce things up and add some new planting beds.
There was lots to do here to spruce up the existing bed spaces and also add new ones. Tons of details went into this one, from weeding, extensive pruning on various trees and shrubs, perennial divisions which were replanted throughout the beds, shrubs that were transplanted, irrigation moved and re-configured, landscape fabric removed, many new plants installed(mostly natives), natural bed edges were created or restored and some beds were defined with granite cobblestones, on the left front corner of the house a row of tightly placed boulders created a new bed edge/retaining border, a mailbox planting bed was added and lastly in the back yard a new large woodland garden area was created with mostly native plants, shrub relocations, perennials divisions and some boulders sprinkled throughout.

Invasive plants and ecological landscaping. The photo below shows how easily invasive Japanese Knotweed can spread. This was found in screened topsoil and knotweed is able to survive from small pieces of root material.

Landscaping ecologically means using native plants and whenever possible not importing soils as we never know what could be in it. Some of these invasives like knotweed are incredibly hard to eradicate once it gets established.
