South Windsor. This project was first created about 10 years ago, mainly comprising foundation planting beds and one along a back fence line. 10 years later the client was ready to spruce things up and add some new planting beds.
There was lots to do here to spruce up the existing bed spaces and also add new ones. Tons of details went into this one, from weeding, extensive pruning on various trees and shrubs, perennial divisions which were replanted throughout the beds, shrubs that were transplanted, irrigation moved and re-configured, landscape fabric removed, many new plants installed(mostly natives), natural bed edges were created or restored and some beds were defined with granite cobblestones, on the left front corner of the house a row of tightly placed boulders created a new bed edge/retaining border, a mailbox planting bed was added and lastly in the back yard a new large woodland garden area was created with mostly native plants, shrub relocations, perennials divisions and some boulders sprinkled throughout.

Invasive plants and ecological landscaping. The photo below shows how easily invasive Japanese Knotweed can spread. This was found in screened topsoil and knotweed is able to survive from small pieces of root material.

Landscaping ecologically means using native plants and whenever possible not importing soils as we never know what could be in it. Some of these invasives like knotweed are incredibly hard to eradicate once it gets established.

Ellington. Various plantings were wrapped up on this job. In the back yard the leaves that were removed from the planting area were spread back around the base of the trees after planting. Disturbed areas were finished with seed and straw. Additional comments and plant id provided in individual photos.

Ellington. Some Green Giant Arborvitaes are being added to the back corner of this property for screening purposes. In the front yard a Marthas Vineyard Fir was planted in the lamp post bed and some Rhododendrons were relocated to a more suitable woodland area and boxwoods installed. More plantings to follow on this project.

Happy Earth Day! 🌎

It’s a beautiful day to get outside and appreciate the natural spaces around us. Whether it’s your backyard, a local trail, or a neighborhood green space, these places thrive when we take care of them.

Incorporating native plants, supporting wildlife, and landscaping with intention are simple ways we can all make a difference right here in our community. 🌱

Early spring garden cleanup can disrupt critical invertebrate habitat and leave pollinators out in the cold. Our guidelines will help you determine when cleaning up won't bug the pollinators in your space.

Spring migration is officially underway here! 🌎🐦

Millions of birds are on the move right now, traveling north to their breeding grounds, and many are passing right over our community. You might notice increased bird activity in your yard, local forests, and around our waterways in the coming weeks. Over the next week or so, keep an eye out for early migrants like red-winged blackbirds, common grackles, eastern phoebes, and returning waterfowl.

You can help migrating birds by:
• Turning off unnecessary outdoor lights at night
• Keeping cats indoors
• Making windows more bird-safe

Want to see migration in real time? Check out BirdCast, a live bird migration forecast powered by radar data!
It shows when peak migration nights are happening and how many birds are flying overhead! Keep an eye (and ear!) out… you never know what might stop by during migration season!
