As I was already down Seaton, I thought I'd treat the apprentice to an afternoon out on the beach and an ice cream, which makes a pleasant change to her daily rations of gruel and bread!

A most fowl chimney sweep fact:

In the 18th and 19th centuries, before the invention of modern, efficient sweeping tools, chimney sweeps sometimes used live geese to clean chimneys.
A goose with its legs tied together would be dropped down the chimney. As it panicked, the bird would flap its wings, dislodging soot from the chimney walls.
The practice led to the old, grim saying: "The blacker the goose, the cleaner the flue".
