At Bovey....Next week, our number of the week is going to be 3 and we are going to be reading the book ‘Dear Zoo’. The children will be creating their own animals as well as lots of opportunities to roleplay and explore animals that they might find in the zoo. We will also be comparing the looks and sizes of animals and the different things each animal might do. Through our music and movement sessions, we will be exploring our garden like different animals. During focus time, we will be working on our fine motor skills and letter formation by copying letters from our names. We are also going to be observing our caterpillars and understanding the cycle of life.

This week, our book of the week has been ‘the very hungry caterpillar’ and our number of the week has been 2. The children have really enjoyed observing the caterpillars through their magnifying glasses and over the week watching how big they are growing. The children are very excited for the next few weeks to watch them become butterflies. We have been understanding the cycle of life of a caterpillar turning into a butterfly. The children have taken part in arts and crafts activities where they have been creating caterpillars and exploring messy play to find insects.

At Honiton....Next week our book of the week is We’re going on a bear hunt and we’re going to be learning about all types of weather.  Our word and sign of week is Sun. During the week we will be using our senses to explore different textures in our sensory tuff tray, this will include grass, leaves, water, gloop to represent mud and ice or cotton wool for the snow which will be in the garden. Inside we will be making our own sunshine’s onto paper plates and using different yellow and orange materials such as paint, tissue paper, pens, pencils and glitter.

During letters and sounds we’re really going to be focusing on using our listening ears. We will be doing activities such as a listening moment, drumming outdoors and describe and find it.

Last week our book of the week was ‘The very hungry caterpillar’. The children have really shown lots of interest in having discussions about the foods they eat and what foods are healthy for us during our cube times. Inside the children have been so creative and have created some masterpieces using the paint, they’ve even learnt to mix colours to create new ones. Outside the children have been exploring ice, they have been holding it in their hands to see how quickly it melts and they’ve loved splashing in the water once it’s melted.

At Whipton....Next week our book of the week will be Egg to Bee, our Makaton sign will be bee, and our number of the week will be 1.

Throughout the week, the children will discover how bees grow, what they do, and why they are so important for our world. Our weekly focus will centre on understanding the world, and in our invitation to play we will explore the life cycle of a bee using natural materials, flowers, and small world bees for the children to investigate, sort, and sequence.

To extend this learning, our continuous provision will include a bee garden sensory tray, filled with oats, yellow pompoms, flowers, and small bees for scooping, pouring, pollinating, and imaginative storytelling.

Last week, the children absolutely loved learning about superheroes, they made masks, shields and capes! But with the return of the lovely warm weather, we were also able to spend lots of time outdoors, making the most of the paddling pools, sand tray, and water play.

At Honiton....This week at Honiton we have been learning about farms! At cube times with the toddlers we have been looking at the book “Oh Dear” and have used the farm animals in the cube to help us find them in the story. We have been talking about the names of animals and the sounds they make. The babies had farm animals in water and have been giving them a good wash! We have also had animals in a tuff tray and have been role playing farms by putting them into the barn and feeding them grass. The toddlers have been exploring different shapes and have been using these to create their own tractors! We talked about the big wheels and the small wheels and how tractors go to the farm.

As we’ve had lots of sunshine this week we had paddling pools out every day too, we had fun splashing in the water to keep us cool. We had balls in the water and buckets to practice some transportation skills.

Next week we are learning about sounds and our book is “Nature sounds”. The babies will be exploring musical instruments and the different sounds they make and will be listening out for sounds in the garden, like birds or cars. The toddlers will be creating their own musical instruments using different items, such as pasta and feathers to make different sounds. Outside we will have water play with metal bowls and wooden spoons to explore how using wooden spoons on metal bowls can make sounds with water in the bowls.

At Budlake....Next week our story is how to count to one and during our enhanced learning opportunities we will be doing all things maths. In the small world area, we will be exploring the counting bears with matching coloured bowls, tweezers, and magnifying glasses. We will be comparing sizes, matching colours and grouping objects alongside an adult to support our learning. In the garden we will be drawing around each other using chalks and then comparing the length of our bodies using tape measures to see how tall we are compared our friends. our focus of the week will be practising and strengthening our gross motor skills and in our continuous provision we will be accessing resources such as playdough with large tools, bats and balls and climbing equipment.

This week our book was all about under the sea, we loved exploring sand playdough which helped to strengthen our fine motor skill through the use of tools such as rollers and cutters. As it was so sunny this week we have spent the afternoons enjoying the paddling pools, splashing in them, going down the slides and filling and emptying containers. We have also loved using paper and scissors to make our own fans and practised using one handed tools to make snips in the paper.

At Whipton....Next week we will be learning all about superheroes. Our book of the week will be There’s a Superhero in Your Book by Tom Fletcher, our number of the week will be 10, and our Makaton sign will be superhero. Throughout the week we will explore what it means to be a superhero, with lots of rescuing, helping others, and saving the day!

At the creative table, the children will design and decorate their own superhero masks and capes. Once they are ready, we will take our superhero creations outside, where the children can practise their superhero moves and act out imaginative rescue missions together. Our small world area will become a superhero rescue zone, complete with characters, buildings, and vehicles.

During focus time, we will continue to develop our fine motor skills by practising scissor control, making snips, and cutting along simple lines. The children will also enjoy superhero‑themed colour games, matching activities, and mark‑making opportunities such as designing badges and logos.

Our Shark in the Park theme was a wonderful success, and the children fully immersed themselves in the story and its playful surprises. They showed great enthusiasm during group reading, joining in with repeated refrains and predicting what might appear through Timothy Pope’s telescope next.

During adult led learning we will be making sea shell fans using paper folded backwards and forwards with our own crayon decorations added to our shells. We will be learning how to fold the paper each way and having a go at using variety of one-handed tools such as crayons, paint brushes and scissors to help us strengthen our fine motor movements. Outside we will be exploring an under the sea water tray with exciting objects to explore such as sea w**d, shells and sea animals, we will be exploring the feel of sea w**d and using descriptive language to describe what we see, smell and feel. In our continuous provision we will be exploring turn taking and sharing whilst exploring a range of resources and activities such as balls games, parachute games and small world toys.

For letters and sounds next week we will be taking part in activities such as drum outdoors this is where we explore our environment using sticks to explore the sounds different outdoor objects make such as fencing, slides and the floor. We will be talking about the types of sounds these objects make such as loud sounds, hollow sounds or deep sounds.

This week our story was whatever next and we learnt about all things space, we took a walk on the moon wearing our very own space boots where we imagined that we were in a zero-gravity environment and taking our first steps on the moon we talked about how we could get to the moon and then made our very own rockets using boxes just like in the story. outside we loved playing in the galaxy water and strengthened our fine motor movements using tweezers to pick out pom poms and collect them in bowls.
