🐄 The Scottish Government has announced plans to tighten the calving-interval threshold for the Scottish Suckler Beef Support Scheme (SSBSS) from 410 to 400 days in 2028 and 2029, subject to legislation.

The 410-day rule will stay in place for 2027.

🚜 FFIS Round 2 Update.

New guidance has been published for the next Future Farming Investment Scheme round, covering total funding available per claimant, how applications will be scored, and the 74 eligible options (with two more added this week, including the popular cattle crush from round 1).

We've been working closely with Scottish Government policy writers to clarify the rules, and reworded guidance is expected next week when their website goes live again. In the meantime our summary of Round 2 rules is here: https://fbrseed.s.gy/FFIS-2026-update

More changes to the eligible options are likely before the round opens, so keep an eye on the guidance as it evolves.

💰Making Tax Digital for Income Tax: 2nd Quarter Submission Deadline.

Under Making Tax Digital for Income Tax rules, all eligible self-employed individuals and landlords must submit their second quarterly update by the 7 November 2026.

This submission covers the period from 6 July - 5 October 2026 and must be submitted to HMRC through compatible software.

🌾 Supporting the Route to Rural

At FBR Seed, we are proud to support rural education and careers.

This summer, FBR Seed Director Jenni Douglas volunteered on a RHET school visit to a local farm. For a group of 8- and 9-year-olds, it was a chance to see first-hand where their food comes from, from the livestock and the butchery process to the crops that end up on our plate.

Early education is what builds the next generation of rural professionals, and we’re proud to play our part in encouraging careers in the rural industry. Alex Turnbull, our graduate surveyor, first joined us for a work placement during her fourth year studying Rural Business Management at SRUC.

The hands-on experience she gained set her up and we were delighted to see her hard work paid off when she graduated with a first-class honour's degree. After completing her degree, Alex joined the FBR Seed team in a permanent role and now works across the departments within FBR Seed from valuations to land and farm sales and more.
