Made the most of a lovely afternoon.. started hacking our way through our new garden. With Autumn on the scythe and me on the hedge trimmers we made short work of it 💪 still loads to do but it's looking much tidier around the edges. Found some relics too!

This is the happiest in-ground pepper I've ever grown.
I think several factors contribute to this one's success.

1) a good early start. I start all my seeds in January indoors in my tent, and start moving them outdoors under shade cloths usually in mid May.

2) it's a Rocoto. Capsicum pubescens are actually capable of growing during cooler conditions, unlike other Capsicum species. This one grew right through 8c nights, whereas my annuums and even baccatums started to struggle.

3) With in-ground peppers, never transplant them directly into soil. I'll always mix up some compost and perlite, dig a bigger hole, and fill this mix around the edges before transplanting. I've found that the clay soil here holds air pockets which prevent roots from growing.

I was one of those people that looked at pictures of Goats W**d online and decided I didn't need to grow it, wasn't that cool. I'm so glad I changed my mind. The texture is unlike anything else I've seen!
