Any gardeners looking to build a smaller home? How does a house plan with an attached potting shed sound?

G0059 is a plan that has been around since the beginning—before the internet and social media. It was one of the plans featured in the black and white plan books we sent to developers and builders in our area. So when we say we adore this little plan, we mean it.

A house plan we haven’t featured in a while — and it’s a unique one. Originally designed for Hammonds Ferry, SC, the Greer Lane house plan is similar to our Crofter ADU plan, but this one looks like a full house from the exterior. You’d never know the entire first floor is a garage space.

The top floor living space is 747 square feet, with one bedroom (with a walk-in closet), one bath, and an open living space with a kitchen.

Build this plan on your property while you wait to build your larger home, use it as a vacation spot, or — if you’re at the stage of life where this is all the space you need — make it your permanent home.

The Crofter (18411G) plan is designed with a garage on the ground level and a living suite above—but that doesn’t mean the possibilities stop there.

While the garage is primarily intended for cart parking, the ground floor could offer an opportunity to create additional living space down the road. Think a home office, guest space, workout room, studio, or another flexible living area.

That’s one of the things we love about ADUs: they can grow and adapt with the way you use your property.

Start with parking and a living suite above. Down the road, you may have the option to transform even more of the structure into space that works for you.

A chimney cap may seem like a minor architectural detail, but it has a big impact on the overall silhouette of a home.

Our rule? Do choose a cap that feels appropriately scaled, complements the architecture, and looks like it belongs there. Clay pots and well designed masonry caps are some of our favorites.

Don’t top a beautiful chimney with an undersized, generic metal cap that feels like an afterthought. It’s easy to do when the cap isn’t top of mind, but we promise, it should be.

Because when it comes to good architecture, the details matter—even the ones at the very top.

Looking to build an elevated home with character? Need a smaller footprint? We have a plan for you.

The North Breeze (NC0064) is a 2.5 story plan with 1 bedroom, 2 bathrooms, 340 square feet of covered porch space, and 909 heated square feet. Originally designed to sit along the water in Beaufort, SC, this plan is vertical, breezy, and nothing like the house next door.

645 square feet. 1 bed, 1 bath. And it still shows up with a full front porch — because being on the smaller side doesn’t mean a plan should lack architectural intent.

This is the Wren Cottage (183167), one of our favorite small house plans. In this plan, every square inch has a job. No space wasted.

Let’s do a floor plan walk-through of one of our tried and true Lowcountry plans, the St. Helena (11326).

The main level centers around the great room, with the kitchen and dining room connected for easy everyday living and entertaining. The primary suite sits just off the great room, giving it privacy without separating it from the heart of the home—and it connects directly to the screened porch, which may be the best spot in the house for morning coffee.

A second bedroom/den adds flexibility, while the upstairs gives you two more bedrooms and a shared bath.

And then there are the porches. Front porch, rear porch, screened porch, deck… because around here, outdoor living is not optional.

This elevated house plan is an amazing option for those building along the coast.
