Creating a sense of place. Central Coast architects with 35+ years of local expertise 🌊 No one knows quite how to create a sense of place like we do.

We work with people who appreciate what the Santa Barbara life is all about. People who not
only want a home designed around their own unique lifestyle, but one that’s also sensitive to the
local environment and connected to the beauty around it. This way of working comes directly
from the deep rooted beliefs of our partners, Dave and Mary. We’ve been here over 25 years, earning our creds as old-school locals, and constantly evolving
our understanding of the central coast. All this time has helped us develop really close relationships with local craftsmen, designers, and agencies so our clients get the very best results. It’s also important to us that we spend as much time as possible with each client, from first sketches to the last day of the build, so we’re there every step of the way. It’s all of these things together that make the difference between a good project and a great one. We know our work needs to be more than just beautiful, it also needs to compliment and respect this place we’ve all grown to love.

IN THE STUDIO SEAT WITH FIA CLEMENTI

Meet Fia! She joined NMA in August 2022 with a Bachelor of Architecture from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

Born and raised in Santa Barbara, Fia knew she wanted to be an architect from a young age. Growing up in a creative family with four older siblings, she developed an early love for art and the natural world. At Cal Poly, that foundation let her spend less time learning tools and more time engaging with design, exploring what matters most to her as a designer. With a passion for natural contexts and for people, she's right at home doing that work with NMA, back in Santa Barbara where it all began.

Out of the studio seat, you'll find her kayaking near Morro Rock, sketching charcoal figure drawings, making block prints, catching live music, or enjoying a backyard fire on a sunny afternoon.

Guests arrive without knowing exactly what to expect, so a guesthouse needs to feel welcoming from the very first step. At this guesthouse, that welcome starts outside with a garden setting, a reflecting pool, and curved forms that make arrival feel calm, inviting, and just a little unexpected.

Every home has a sweet spot, and in this 1930s beach cottage, a little built-in desk tucked under the sloped ceiling, with warm wood walls, a woven chair, and fresh flowers, is just that. In a home made for gathering, it still matters to have a quiet place to land, even if it is just a little seat.

A staircase is one of the most used parts of a home, so we spend a lot of time thinking about how it looks, how it feels underfoot, and what you see as you move through it. These five projects each found a different answer to the same question, and we love how different those answers can be. Which would you choose?

We studied how the oaks frame the site and how the sandstone catches light through the day. The copper rooflines, rounded forms, and native stone walls all came from paying attention to what was already there.

There's a lot on the menu in this renovated 1950s California ranch home. We worked with the owners to open up the kitchen, dining, and living areas while preserving the home they love. White cabinets, a bold teal backsplash, a dining table with a starburst chandelier overhead, colorful art, and floor-to-ceiling sliding glass all come together under one vaulted ceiling, with high windows bringing daylight in from above.

A great entry should feel like an invitation. At this Montecito home, stone steps lead through a lush yard where the trees filter the light and the low roofline sits quietly behind the canopy. It is the kind of approach that slows you down and lets you take it all in before you reach the door.

In the Del Mar beach home, the line between inside and outside practically disappears. Ocean light fills every room through big retractable doors (Cooper claimed a front-row seat).

We spend a lot of time thinking about how people arrive at a home, because the entry is the handshake of the design. From a bright pop of color to a quiet stone path, every arrival sets its own tone.
