This National Aviation Week, we're celebrating Project Director Mike Hill, Sundt's aviation lead, who recently earned the Wanamaker Award for Lifetime Achievement from SWAAAE, the Southwest Chapter of the American Association of Airport Executives.

Named for longtime CAAE Executive Emeritus Robert Wanamaker, the award honors those who've given their talent to the betterment of aviation. It's a fitting one for Mike, a 45-year construction veteran who spent 22 years shaping Tucson International Airport, from terminal expansions and concourse remodels to hangar completions and major system upgrades. Mike has been active with SWAAAE for 20 years, including two terms on the board.

"I just love this industry, this association, and the people in it," Said Mike. "Getting nominated by people who've been in the business longer than me... that's what made it special."

Sundt is upgrading Santee Cooper’s Rainey Generating Station in Iva, South Carolina. The multi-phase expansion project is designed to increase the plant’s efficiency by harnessing extra heat from existing combustion turbines and converting it into additional electricity through steam generation.

These improvements use a “combined-cycle” process that captures waste heat from the plant’s combustion turbines. Heat recovery system generators (HRSGs) convert that heat into steam, which powers a steam turbine to generate additional electricity. The upgrade is expected to improve overall turbine efficiency by 25% to 35%.

The Sundt team self-performed 90% of Phase I, which focused primarily on underground infrastructure, including:
15,000 cubic yards of structural foundations
1,000 linear feet of 6-foot-diameter circulating water piping
1,000 linear feet of electrical duct banks
3,000 linear feet of drain lines

The second phase will complete the installation of the project’s mechanical and electrical equipment. Phase I is targeted for completion in August 2026, while Phase II began in June 2026 and is currently underway.

South Carolina's Crescent Tigers have a brand new space on campus!🐅

Over three days, Sundt employee-owners teamed up with Crescent High School staff, student volunteers, and local business partners to transform an underutilized outdoor area into a welcoming outdoor learning environment. The team graded the site and placed concrete, then returned once it cured to add the finishing touches: outdoor tables, umbrellas, fresh landscaping, and flowers.

This project would not have been possible without the generous support of United Rentals, Thomas Concrete, and American Welding & Construction Supply.
