Another successful Prune Hill Elementary Living Lab planting day. It POURED on us and yet each student was still able to plant a camas lily and a native plant - many wearing their Halloween costumes! 🎃

Had a lot of fun teaching this mini basket class GOOD YEAR FARMS this weekend, thank you to all those who attended! We crammed a lot of materials (willow, rattan cane, yellow flag iris, cherry bark, a drilled wood base) and skills (3-rod wale, pairing, twining, cordage, modified border- didn’t quite get to handles) into this teensy basket. I know I used all my brain cells by the end of the class! hopefully it will be a good starter point for everyone to continue to practice and learn!

This was such a fun project! Thank you so much Heather Rice for commissioning me. And for trusting me as I changed my mind about 5 times and ended up installing something that only tangentially resembled my original idea 🤣🤣. The uprights are of native Beaked Hazel (hard to really see the details against the wood fence, they stand out more in real life). The “waves” are made of Beaked Hazel, basket willows (mostly ‘Winter Green’ from Alana Karam - Willow Farmer ) and Pacific Willow. The twig starburst design is a totally new idea inspired by Heather and I can’t wait to make more. I love how this turned out. It finally feels like Twig Season (though it will take a few cold and rainy days in a row to make it feel official). 🍁

Looking forward to this event tomorrow, I’m soaking a LOT of dried cattail leaves for the coaster weaving craft so I hope to see many of you!

Native plants in Downtown Vancouver!!! And there’s a shop dog! And house plants (with Matt & Kim Sievert ! ) And Frog & Twig obelisks making an appearance! 🤩 Was very excited to visit my dear friends at the soft opening of Goodyear Farms in Downtown today. The mural alone is amazing, I’m a bit biased but you can’t get better than gigantic pacific chorus frogs for a mural. Head to Goodyearfarms.com and sign up for their newsletter for updates and open times. Hope to see you all next Saturday GOOD YEAR FARMS for the harvest festival/ season opener. I’ll be there with obelisks and a free cattail weaving activity. While you’re there don’t miss your chance to get native bulbs, they only come around once a year!
